So according to the FSM for proper shift cable installation and adjustment you are to set the adjuster wheel two or three threads from the end of the cable. What it does not specify is which end are they referring to, the outer end or the inner end.

Anyone?

So the problem wasn't the shift cable adjustment after all. The swedged end at the transmission end of the cable was binding on the receiver and acting like it was locked into place. I could get the trans to shift until the cable would free itself and then it would be stuck in whatever gear it was in when the cable came loose. Good thing I was in the neighborhood doing a test drive.

The repair was fairly simple, drained the fluid, dropped the pan, removed the female receiver and drilled it out ever so slightly at the end to allow the swedged section to slide further in to allow the cable to lock in place. Reinstalled, adjusted the cable as per the FSM and drove the car all around last night with no problems.
