Sickening- Cracked Block - Repairable?

Engine is out and as far as I know there were no previous leaks, but I did not drive it that much before beginning restoration. The engine was rebuilt before I got it and certainly seems to be in good condition otherwise.

Had not noticed this until I replaced freeze plugs, and after the plug was removed evidently it seemed to be obvious, or maybe got worse at that point. Engine had been painted previously so it was not noticeable. Noticed it right after I had installed the new freeze plug.

I really don’t want to get another block engine, etc as this is matching numbers and I have a good bit invested in it.

Competent advice from those of you with experience is very much appreciated.

Yes it can be fixed. I have seen lifter holes destroyed and the block was fixed.

That is absolutely how to fix it. My metallurgists consider this repair the best cast iron repair hands down. Done properly, can be considered as good as new.

Also looks like you have another small crack at about the 7 o'clock position.

My buddy had a '35 Nash that had a foot ling freeze crack that was repaired 70+ years ago with a brass plate, a homemade gasket and about 30 machines screws tapped into the block... never leaked.

One of the first big trucks I drove with a NH220 Cummins engine had a rod break thru the block. My boss fixed it with fibeglass and Black Magic bondo... ran 3,000 miles per week fir years.

I still have a 440 I rebuilt in the early 80s. I found a similar crack in it. I veed out the crack with a grinder and filled it with JB Weld. I hasn't leaked in decades now.

Lock and stitch is what I would try. And it's something you could do right in your garage. There are a bunch of videos on it on line.

Is it the numbers matching engine? If not, I’d pick up another 383 or 400 block and use it.
