So what do you think of this '70 V code 'Cuda? Super deal, or smell like fish?

People float titles all the time but with a car like this he should have transferred it. I too won't put any money into a car that wasn't titled in my name.

Same as post #37, I wouldn't transfer a title I'm not keeping. This state has just proven itself as the f'ing thieves they are by raising the vehicle tax 40% willy nilly. F them. Never had a problem with "jumped" titles.

I have a legit 71 GTX V code car I bought a few months back. I am struggling with registering it in my state as well. The taxes are criminal, no other way to put it. I've never floated a title ever, but I'm thinking about it now, especially after reading other people do it. We're looking to move out of the nut case socialist state we're in, so I was thinking about seeing where we end up before titling. I've always been very leery of buying something that was not in the person's name I was buying it from. For that reason, I'll probably title sooner than later, but I will be understating the price on it big time.

Ironically, one of the reasons I was worried about buying a U Code Challenger out of FL several months back was because the guy had not titled it. He too didn't want to pay taxes. I ended up not buying it, more to do about it needing more work than I wanted to put into it. But the title not in his name did bother me.

With the onerous overreach of the Fed's and States, I wonder how many people are floating titles these days. Especially with exotics etc. Is it pretty common? In Montana you can get an LLC for about $700. I've heard that there are more Ferrari's and Porsche's titled in Montana than anywhere these days!

I bought a car with an open title and cash only from a collector. I was concerned about it but I really wanted the car and decided to take the risk. I had a guy who does auto transport deliver it for me too which created more work and worries. Fortunately he's a friend of mine in the area, so I was less worried about entrusting him with a big envelope of Benjamin's than I would have been with a stranger. He told me he's been involved in transporting for cash only deals of 6 figures!!!! That's a lot of hunnies to count.
I was most concerned about legal highway robbery aka civil asset forfeiture. He has a hidden compartment in his trailer so he said he doesn't worry about the police.
That cuda looks nice but price seems crazy for no engine no K member with skid plate and who knows what else is missing.
I was trying to sell my beautiful no rust ever but NOM '71 V code A34 Challenger in the 70's price range for quite some time until pulling it off the market last summer due to rising car prices and inflation killing the dollar. Better a cool car mostly away in storage than money losing value in the bank now. I'd like to turn it into a Coronet R/T convertible but otherwise I'll keep it. I know cuda's bring more than Challengers but still a no engine assemble it yourself cuda worth 60?

That is my problem with this deal. If he had titled it in his name before putting up for sale, I would be pulling my trailer there as we speak. I did a google search on the name that is on the title the current seller plans to give to the new buyer. That man is deceased.

You could always call your DMV and explain the title situation to them, asking if there will be any problems and what additional documentation you will need under the circumstances. I did that before I bought a no-title car and it was very helpful.

lets assume he did not want to pay taxes in Kalifornia...
Now he would have to pay fines and fees ( thousands) for NOT licensing it or not showing the KALifornia DMV he had it and it would be unlicensed, which brings us back to not paying sales tax on it.... A possibility here....

That's a great looking car and I'm surprised it didn't sell.

I would wonder why some one would spend that much time and money on the car and never put it in his name. I know I wouldn't, what if something happened how would you claim or prove ownership?

I’m not the least bit upset about being “stuck” with it.
Funny I pulled the ad and had two “nibblers” call me up soon after wondering if I’d sold it and still interested. One checked back with me again a few weeks ago and I told him, unless I find another car to replace it I’m keeping it!

WOW that is going to take some MASSIVE body and frame work!!
:lol::poke:

The title wouldn't scare me at all...
at least he supposedly has one
even here or from here,
it can be a negotiation/bargaining chip for the buyer too

he has a crapload of $$$ in it in paint/body
(go out & price that **** now) let alone the time & efforts
don't know about the rest of what he "allegedly" has
need to put eyes & hands on it, to know...

is it in the org. factory color ?
or has that been changed or not documented too ?
could be another big hit in value

value (?)
depends on what parts & shape
how much of it all the lil' **** will $100 bill you to death
I could see spending near $60k to get it to that point
if you're paying someone else to do all the work

looks nice in the photos
need proof it is what he claims it is too

Make it A resto-mod/pro-touring ride
& be ahead of the game
don't worry about the OE or the #'s ****
seems today it is valued much like an all OE restoration
or more in value, if done well, professionally-looking/quality...

it's not 1977 anymore, not even 2007 anymore
people know what they have & can see what they could be worth

is it worth that, in it's the current state ? (big question)
would I pay that for it ? as it sits, NO
not with what I've read here, he 'allegedly' has,
all 2nd or third party info
it's no longer #'s matching car
so take that out of the equation altogether
in the MoPar 'Purist' VIN, fender tags, stampings, broadcast/build sheet
readers world that's a 20%-25% hit right there
let alone all the lil' **** that will $100 bill (or $1,000+ bill) you to death

Someone maybe could do it/finish the car themselves
source an era correct date codded/proper block
& correct 6bbl set up, carbs, accessories, glass, trim chrome/stainless
all the correct date coded parts, NOS etc., cha-ching
interior, drivetrain suspension etc.
& still maybe make a buck

or make it 'their bucket list car', not worry about #'s or resale value etc.
not everything is built for resale either

my $1.25

I'm interested in a car from Alabama but they don't issue a title for cars 35 years or older. Ive spoken with someone in the upper managment in the titling/registration branch of the state transportation department and I asked about a special title issue at a ruinous cost, but the best they said they can do for me is the cars VIN, Reg/tag numbers and current owner in a letter on state letter head.

I spoke with my local insurance agency about this and they are OK with the letter and a notarized bill of sale to get the car into my name....but I need to cross the US and Canada borders and I'm having a heck of a time getting anyone from those gov't agencies to give me a straight answer as to if they would accept this as an alternative title. I won't move on the car until I have all the paper work sorted out.

Maybe not for the Seller, but definitely the Buyer.
There are two bank account numbers on a wire transfer. There are no bank account numbers on cash.
The government sees what?
If I bought that car and shipped it here, took pictures with it in pieces and told the lady at the messenger service that it is a basket case, look at these pictures. She would not question if I said I got it for $2500 and that what the sales tax would be based on.
I hand the seller cash, now nobody knows.

Minnesota came up with what they thought was a clever way to tax sales of cars purchased from outside of State. They tax at the recommended original retail value. Lol. Ok. My $40k B-body retail value in 1969? Was under $4k. I have yet to run across this new policy. I guess it's better than everyone just lying? Salvage titles are exempt.

Exactly how I do it except we don't need pictures.

My perspective is as long as the title is signed and I'm in possession of it, it's mine. Nine tenths of the law.
