"The most wonderful time of the year".....Balderdash!

Well you gota do what you gota do. I like the San Diego area. Been to La Jolla many a time. Cal is a beautiful state with awesome weather just toooo many people for small town me.
I think I could use the small town life. Waaaayyy too many people and too much noise in san diego. I guess I'm getting old but I want peace and f**king quiet now...

It was sarcasm, lol. I’m born and raised here. Family and career keeps me here. The state is definitely going to **** quick. We’re looking at relocating to Florida in 10years. We’l see how that pans out.
I get it Thats why I'm where I am . But this time next year ill be in Naples Fla. Look me up if your in town. dont wait too long to relocate all the states are going to ****....Especially the north eastern ones

EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEERCH, whoa, stop, backup...... I certainly was not referring to you Ed or actually anyone else in this tread. Man, did that come out wrong. I was referring to people that always complain and bitch about where they live but never do anything to change that. I was raised that if you don't like the situation that you are in that it is up to you to change the situation. Thats all.
Actually Tennessee is one of states that I have never been to. I hear tell that it is a beautiful place and is on my to do list.
Oh man, you got me riled there for a minute
I was wondering "what the heck is he barking at me about?"

I love Tennessee, especially this part of the state - I knew the moment I came here.
It was weird how that happened, but I didn't argue with it.
That said, the state is like 800 miles wide and it changes a LOT as you go across, from the
hilly Appalachian end (where I am) to the flatlands of the west (over towards where @CudaChick1968 is).
Cities here are no different than anywhere else, too - there are parts of Nashville, Chattanooga, Knoxville
that'll get you killed in broad daylight if you aren't careful.
If you look on a political map, they're the only blue spots on the state - the rest is blazing red. :)

Now - is it the place for everyone?
Heck no.
We got tons of rednecks, there's areas of desperate poverty and there's the usual rural meth thing
in places, too...but for the most part, the way of life is slower, people still are old fashioned when it comes
to respecting others, helping one another, religion and the whole Americana thing and BOY, is it cheaper
to live here, too.

My grandparents on my moms side emigrated from Holland to Canada, after WW1, cause they couldn't get into the US. The immigration quotas were filled. When they finally were allowed into the united states, after WW2, they had to speak the language, have a job, have a place to live , and references from family already here. In those days, you couldnt just walk across the border and demand a handout. My grandparents had relatives in southern california, so thats where they, and my mom who had been born in Canada ended up.
My dad , born in Michigan, liked the weather so much better when he was stationed in Dago,he decided to come to southern california after he got out, and got an engineering job in Pasadena (ca, not texas). Mom and dad met at church.
I still own the house they brought me back to, when i was born. It was $9000.

Ah, you're reading comprehension challenged it appears. I've never said, a single solitary time, that I hate
living here. In this particular case, in this very thread, I agreed with another poster that I hated winter weather.
Dig?
"Bitch ***"? Come up my ridge and find out...

Ok, I'll try this again....S-L-O-W-E-R, so maybe you'll understand it this time...

I actually asked the question, generically, then elaborated on why folks live where they live because
I was curious (that and I know it's a good topic that a lot of people like to discus).
As I have posted countless, nauseatingly numerous times - I love where I live and I DID "pick my bitch ***
up and move" in order to GET here over 25 years ago, thanks.
I left a ridiculously urban, expensive, turning leftist quickly area with crappier weather to do so, even
though I had a good gig going and had a couple decades' worth of friends and work there and had to
start from scratch here.

Anyways...
Several of these fine folks have answered herein and there's common themes amongst the answers, namely,
family/born there and for work. Those are certainly to be expected, because that's why most folks do
live where they do - point being, weather is usually a little further down the list behind those and the
cost of living.
(In my case, both sides of my family were originally from TN - although ironically, I am now the sole
surviving member of my immediate family still in the state.
Still - it's where I belong.)

Now, to further the discussion - for those who live where they do because of family ties, I want to
expand upon that a bit further:
Do you know why your ancestors chose to live there as well?
What got the "clan" there to begin with?
My ancestors moved west from Kentucky in the 1800s . Ox died here. Here we are.
But a kidding aside I have no idea why they stopped in iowa.

Oh man, you got me riled there for a minute
I was wondering "what the heck is he barking at me about?"
Dude you have way too much crap going on in your life for anyone to be barking at you. We agree on a lot of things and you are an inspiration to me with your great attitude.

Fog this morning until about 1:00, by 4:30 the sun is almost at the horizon. A little over 3 1/2 hours of clear sunlight today. Yaaaay!

Move to the Equator... The days are longer..

Your options are...

The Equator passes through 13 countries: Ecuador, Colombia, Brazil, Sao Tome & Principe, Gabon, Republic of the Congo, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Uganda, Kenya, Somalia, Maldives, Indonesia and Kiribati.

I highlighted the two best options.... Brazil sounds good at first... Then you discover the crime rate...

Please don't take offense, but one of my favorite questions to ask folks is "why do you choose to live there?"
It's nothing accusatory - I'm genuinely curious as to how folks wind up where they do oftentimes.

You, of all people here, NEVER has to apologize to me for anything. Much like me you put yourself, your life, and your opinions out there to be seen and discussed. That takes balls and
I respect that. The people that give nothing but are quick to join the torch bearing mob can eat me.
But to your question. I’m sixty, moved here when I was nine. Left when I was in my mid twenties and moved back for good in my mid thirties. It’s a tough life, in some ways, but in a strange sort of way that’s part of the attraction. The wimps and the sissies get sorted pretty quickly. I look at it the same way as a marathon runner looks at completing a marathon, as in “hell yeah, it’s cold. I freakin’ did it!”
There’s money to be made here. This truly is the land of opportunity.
People are pretty accepting of genuine people here. You can be black, white, gay, straight or whatever, it’s all good. If you’re an asshole you’ll soon carry your teeth around in a little bag in your pocket.
It’s beautiful here, if a person takes the time to look. Northern lights are common. Sunrise, sunset, all gorgeous.
Summers are fantastic. Although last summer sucked it seldom rains here. It’s light 24/7. Temps between 70 and 90, dry heat.
There’s nobody here. Nobody. Alaska has people, we don’t.
Really the only bad things are the winter cold and the summer bugs. Both can be dealt with.
I much prefer cold and bugs to heat and humidity, rain and damp.

I'll agree. It takes a certain tough breed to live at the top of the world. I'm too much of a pussy to live up there. Hell I'm too much of a pussy to live a 100 miles up the road in Gunnison CO where it falls below zero most every winter night. One of the coldest towns in the lower 48.

Yep. Something to be said for not being within eyeshot of the neighbors...
You can make all the racket you want with boomsticks and Mopars, too. :)

Exactly why I moved where I am now, in the county but about 5 minutes from a town. I have a 100 meter range on the property and while I do have one neighbor about 200 feet on one side, the next nearest is about 300 meters. No one says squat and due to the trees and terrain it is pretty isolated. I love the property, just not the state politics.

The Wife has dealt with me being a complainer about Winter for years. She doesn't like it either but has kept a lid on it for the most part. Tonight she let go though. It seems that she is as bothered by all of this as I am. I know she hates extended periods of rain but I didn't know that the winter had the same effect on her as it does on me.
Now....Knowing that she has held back from telling me, I have mixed feelings. She was probably trying to keep me from getting worse but this actually is having the opposite effect. I may end up being the one to prop us both up to keep our moods in check.
Three years ago when I was scared about a surgery, she kept strong about it even though she was scared too. Sometimes you have to put on a show to keep everything from going berzerk.

Its raining up there for you guys?

No.
That was a general comment about periods of extended rain.

Sort of have the opposite thing going here re: weather and location than you do, Greg.

She's from NH, so she loves snow and all this cold weather crap doesn't bother her;
my family is from TN and the 20+ years I lived up in DC, I've seen enough winter to last
several lifetimes.

She has a big extended family with grandkids from up that way and doesn't want to move
further away than we are now (but also doesn't want to move any closer, amusingly);
me, I got nothing but a brother and sister left and we don't ever see each other, just keep
in occasional touch, so I got nothing tying me here but history.

Bonus round for me here is given my health and life expectancy situation, I feel the road
tugging at me strongly ("gotta see all this before I'm gone"/bucket list type crap).
She is quite content with life here, in fact swears she will stay here after I'm pushin' daisies
from the root ends.

I'd say the compromise might be some Winnebago trips in the future, honestly. She'd go with me
wherever I wind up probably, but I'm not one to drag anyone along kicking and screaming.
