TKO 500 Install - 1966 Coronet - SST Kit

more of not a lot to report...let the Coronet settle for a while on all wheels for a few days and taking some driveline measurements

just noticed my exhaust passenger side was gonna fall off at some point in the future. will be needing to weld on a new hanger.

anyhow...Thank you to all who served our blessed United States of America

let me know if buying a few new tools counts as project progress?

it’s back up in the air

next steps is rotating crank to unbolt the transmission converter donut thing

what direction do I spin front pulley on engine? clockwise?

its a 440

used a remote starter switch to spin the crank and get to the drain plug on the torque converter as directed in the factory service manual

the manual says to remove bolts on the plate attached to the TC but theyre just a bit deep and the oil pan seems to interfere with ratchet/socket access

any idea if oil pan and steering bar have to come off to get the bolts out?

I usually crack mine loose with a good box end wrench with a nice offset built into it.

el Wobbly ya trabajo

now onto the removal of the 727

i think I have the trans removal kit ready to ship across the western U.S. for any B-Body minus the Joe Bonamassa soundtrack

There are a LOT of threaded holes in that flywheel. I wonder if that is to accommodate different clutch sizes ?

did a runout measurement.

i have a total indicated runout of 0.0275” so divide that by 2 and my bellhousing misalignment comes out to 0.01375” - will have to pull the dowels and correct with 0.014” offset dowels

fun fun fun...

got bellhousing and flywheel off. one dowel sits deep and not a lot of material to bite onto

not a lot of space to us a proper dowel pin puller tool with engine in car. was thinking of drilling/tapping but no space either.

gonna have to get some flat bar and make up my own extraction tool...it’s probably goin to involve some nuts/bolts, taps, and best of all my welder.

my attempt at a dowel pin removal tool

gonna take some acetone, heat, and then some welding

another small step...got my bellhousing dowel pins out of the 440

my super smart flatbar/jackscrew idea did not work....couldn’t get enough heat onto the head of the dowel

ended up mig’n onto the ends of the dowels to build them up enough to grab with vise grips. then was able to grab on and spin the dowels while applying some outward force with a prybar. worked like a charm.

will now move onto final bellhousing alignment...of course after some very last minute Christmas shopping

Thank you Jesus!

still not moved onto bellhousing alignment but pulled the TKO five hundit out of box for a few pics....yeah the welder in the background wasn’t happy and frowned as always

i am used to running a trans cooler supply/return line to the trans. are tko equipped for supply/return lines? do I use the fill/drain plugs for supply/return and if so where does the return from the trans cooler get plugged into the the tko - the fill or drain?

will probably call Silver Sport tomorrow

kept my 2019 resolution...dial the bellhousing for the TKO500 conversion tight

got it within a thou. i had to pull off the dial indicator and walk away for a few hours then come back and setup and remeasure to make sure I wasn’t seeing spoof

it came in tight

2020 resolution: do not view comments on any YouTube videos (this might be harder than finishing the TKO 500 conversion the 66)

Happy & Healthy New Year to All!
