Transmission problem?

I've had my 67 Charger up on jackstands since a brought it home a month ago. I got it running pretty well and wanted to see if the transmission would go thru the gears at all. After putting in into every gear, nothing happened. No reverse, no speedometer working, nothing. Not ever a clunk when I put it into gear. I'm hoping, let everything else I'm finding with this car, the prior owner just didn't put it together correctly. I say that because the guy who sold me the car told me at some point the motor was replaced. I feel I should have gotten something happening, what do you guys think?
 
That's not a lot to go on. I would start with the easy stuff... check linkage (and confirm it is moving the shifter in the trans), fluid, drop the transpan and make sure it actually has a valve body (seen that a few times), make sure there's a converter in it (seen that too), I'm assuming the drive shaft is in it?

Is this an automatic shift vehicle? Or manual valve body? Either way, sounds like you have to start at step one. Check the shifter linkage. That can cause all kinds of issues. Then Check fluid level with car off in park. Note where the fluid is at on the stick (it should read high from sitting due to converter drain back). When it’s running, check it in neutral. See if it’s pumping fluid through the transmission. The fluid level will drop on the dipstick. If it’s pumping fluid properly and the fluid is full, the pump is moving fluid through the transmission. But since you have a total neutral box, there are so many things that can be wrong. Sealing rings could have been left out of the transmission. Which would be very weird or rare, but if it was rebuilt and then sold to you, it’s very possible they missed something. My suggestion is check the easy stuff first, shift linkage and fluid level. If everything is hooked up properly and the trans is pumping fluid, a pressure check at the governor (if automatic shift) and servos would be next step. If trans is showing no pressure with everything hooked up properly, trans will have to come out and be gone through. No pressure means no movement. I hope this helps get you started.

I checked the fluid when I bought the car. It was full with fresh fluid.

Yup, the driveshaft is in. That's all good. I'm going to climb under today and check the linkage. I want to curse the prior owner, but he died of ALS two years ago and this is why I have this car.

Its a column shift 727 transmission.
 
Yup, the driveshaft is in. That's all good. I'm going to climb under today and check the linkage. I want to curse the prior owner, but he died of ALS two years ago and this is why I have this car.
ouch.. rip.

put eyes on the converter too... try to turn it (it shouldn't spin) and check if you can see one of the bolts.
 
wait... I thought all first gen chargers were floor/console shifters. what engine is in it?
Funny you should mention that, I bought all the parts to convert it to a floor shift, I cant stand column shifts in these cars. I just need someone to weld the brackets for the console. Its a 383 with a 727.
 
1-Make sure all the linkage is working.
2-If the engine starts the converter is bolted to the flex plate.
3-Drop the pan and make sure the shift valve is working with the shifter.
4-If full of fluid and all above is correct I suspect the pump ears are broken off. Most likely when the engine was swapped.

Well I'll be... I didn't know they came with column shifters... crazy.
 
In 1967, the console became on option, as well as the Buddy seat. So, it is not uncommon to see 1967 Chargers with automatic with column shift. This applies to 1967 Coronet 500 and R/T as well.
