Ok, I mentioned getting aluminum heads to the better half and she's all for it if it makes me happy. Right now I have 906s all redone fresh that came with this project. I'm considering Edelbrocks, either the E street or the Performer RPMs. I still want to use the MP 1.6 aluminum roller rockers I already own. Which heads are you using and why? I couldn't get much of an answer about the differences from the vendor.

440 +.060, 488/491, single 4bbl, no final intake manifold choice yet, headers

Haven't built myself a 440 yet, but I hear really good things about edelbrock RPM performer heads for all kinds of builds.

Everthing I have heard on alum. is they all still need to be worked over to get to flow right. I went with stage six dir connection becouse got good deal on them. Then I sent to LAROYS ENG to have worked over. I just think what ever you buy you still need to have checked out. I have heard guys get great flow # from the 906 heads it all comes down to your pocket book and what the car will be used for good luck steve

If i went aluminum, i'd probably go with Indy cylinder head heads. 440-H1 kit has been a desirable kit to me since I was 20, but 12 years later i'm still not up to pony up that much dough. Maybe someday.

Rumor is Edelbrock will introduce a new version of the RPM head this fall at SEMA. Probably to be available by next spring. 75cc chamber volume??

If you are debating on using the 84 cc E-Street head or the 84 cc RPM Performer head, they will both give the same performance. Edelbrock is coming out with a 75cc E-Street head as an entry level head for low compression engines. It is a different casting mold from the 84 cc heads and no performance information is available on the 75 cc head yet. It will come with cheaper valves, springs and different material for the hard seat inserts in the heads.

The Edelbrock RPM Performer head is probably the best bang for the buck. It is a known quantity for quality and flow OOTB. Best to tear it down and check seat and valves for roundness and guide clearance, but they always flow 280-290 cfm.

I've ported the RPM and gotten 787 HP from a pump gas 451 stroker. But if you want that kind of power in the future, start with the Victor or some thing from Brodix or Indy.

I went with the Indy EZ heads because they have more potential if I want to step it up more down the road. They come in Max Wedge ports and the exh port is in the stock location. And you use stock type rockers. I only paid a few hundred more for the EZ heads over the Eddy's. Ron

Heads

I went with the Indy sr440 heads, worked over by muscle motors. Great flow.

Why no mention here yet of the 440Source heads. I have read and heard some really good things about them as well????

Because as soon as one of us who run them chime in we get **** on by everyone because they think the whole head is done in china and because of one person's bad experience / or faulty install is negative press, so why even bother?

I'm not sure why but for what ever reason for some it just seems impossible to get a set of good heads for $1k vs $2-3k lol

well i have a set of 440 source stealth heads on my car. car never could get dialed in with the iron heads i had. put the stealth heads on and it woke the car right up.

Are you considering another brand of head or are you set on Edelbrock E-Street or Performer? If you ARE set on the Edelbrock, that's OKAY!

I did look at the Stealth heads also, but I did see a post mentioning problems with them???? Their price is attractive though.

Yup. They are in my future, but the valves will get lapped and the retainers replaced. Still a bargain.

Don't forget the Victor heads by ProComp... I took mine into the machine shop, checked the valves, seats, guides,,,,, Nothing wrong with mine!!!!!! I did have to clean up the intake port openings though....... They all had a casted lip "ring" that went all the way around the entire port openings..... It might have been intentional for marking the cut for Max Wedge size???? I cut it out and blended everything nice and smooth!!!
I'll get the same kick back about the NON USA made stuff, or "Cheap China junk" comments..... But mine are perfect for me and flow as well as the others spending two or three times as much money...... Even the high price heads have been purchased and sent to some miracle worker for "special" porting...... Add that cost to the mix.... LOL!!!

Thanks JB...Just to dispel all those comments about anti China Heads, what I did find out is that the heads are actually machined and milled here in the US but the AL Ingots are made and poured in China. Does that make any sense???

I run the performers but I hear the victors are better. need to use 1.6 rollers.

There is nothing wrong with the 440Source Stealth heads. If thats what fits your budget I would use them and just have them checked over first. And if you have them ported they can flow pretty good. It all boils down to how fast you want to go and how much money you have. For a basic bigblock build I would say the Stealth , RPM , E-street and the basic EZ heads like I use are what I would consider. If you really want to go fast then you get into raised exh port heads like the Eddy Victors and Indy - 1 and so on. I got my EZ heads for a very good price which was only about $250. more then the RPM which I was going to use. I feel the EZ heads may have more potential then the RPM if I go all out on them which I may do in years to come so it was worth the exra few hundred to me. They were cheaper then CNC'd RPM heads but if your building a basic bigblock of 600 hp or less the Stealth and RPM heads will do the job. Thats how I look at it by two things......................................

1 - how fast you want to go
2 - how much money you have to spend.

Good luck , Ron
