Going to add a tachometer (I know it's an automatic) to look at actual rpm's under certain conditions. My coronet has the basic instruments, so thinking about a steering column mounted version, smaller. Any suggestions brands to look at, brands to avoid. Thanks ahead.

Autometer, I've always had good luck with them, you can get ones that look kind of vintage, with chrome bezels too, if need be...

I Like the Autometer tachs too, but I have a Sun Super Tach II(made by Sunpro) in the Belvedere and it works great and looks exactly like the one I had in my old Plymouth 40 some years ago.

I also picked a super tach ii up for like $30 just until i redo the gauge cluster and put in a repro tach etc. looks great, is cheap as hell and doesn't block anything. image.jpg

Think about putting a factory tach in? Mounts to the far right of your cluster where you have the tach delete panel with the cross like seen in post #4 above

What size hose clamp did you need for steering column mount?

I used 2 black zip ties for mounting and then slid them just a bit under the steering column trim piece. Still have access with a micro wire cutter to remove, but totally hidden otherwise.

Btw, i think i have the "mini supertach II", which is 2-5/8" diameter.

Yup, prop, that's the one I plan on using as well. This coming winter i plan to do the volt gauge conversion and installing that tach.

SunPro. Strap it to the column. Use a rusty hose clamp. I did. Galen Govier will like that.

I think Sunpro is the route I will go, short term. and factory long term. How much tear-down is required to install the factory Dash tach?

Ha! I imagine he would. I like the hidden approach much better.

I put a Sun Super Tach II 3 3/8" on the column of my 1969 Coronet R/T with a hose clamp and 3/8 heat shrink covering the clamp to protect the paint and so the shiny clamp would not show.

Here's mine in the RR & a custom fabed set of 7 Autometer gauges, when I finally get around to doing my dash...

It's just down the list in my priority, too many other things need to be done, before I have to take the car completely apart again & paint, what a PITA, I will probably just do it then when the interior is out of the car.... I'm actually kind of torn, whether I even want to do it sometimes... If I hadn't already spent $700 on building, painting & wiring it {I actually built it for another 68 RR that I had sold, just before I finished the gauge panel} or I probably would have just restored my original dash & gauge/cluster... I think it fits the theme of what I'm building thou, a Resto-Mod/Pro-touring kind of ride... If I ever finish it, my car funds are kind of tight, I'm spending a bunch of money on landscaping my front yard & refinishing my decks, this summer probably... I've learned to be patient kind of forcefully...LOL... Tallhair I don't know yet, what I will do with the original gauge panel/cluster... you guys here will be the 1st to know, I'm sure...

I'm running a cheapo Suntune that I got at the swap meet for $5.00. It had a broken trace on the board but worked fine after I flowed some solder on it.

Its a piece of cake man. Well, maybe not cake. Maybe like an old half-eaten granola bar. Anyways, from what I remember it's not caged in with the rest of the cluster and you should be able to swap it out by contorting yourself upside down under the dash and using the accelerator pedal for a pillow.
