I bought my 65 Coronet 500 a year ago & have been gathering drivetrain parts to do a 383/400 swap. Waiting for a buddy to finish his new shop & then we will get cracking. Now however, we see gas creeping higher & higher. Makes me reconsider a 318. What will $5 a gallon do to your projects & current rides ? Just curious if anyone else is rethinking their plans as I am. Don.

Absolutely nothing, can't wait to get it running. The prices wont stay up there long. Then your project is all screwed up.

Well 1st you got great taste in cars. I love my 65 Coronet 500.
I race quite a bit but now diesel is $4.29 a gallon and going up daily, I'll be not racing much.
As far as my street musle cars, I'll park them as well.
I'm not going to give in to this Arab bullshit.
I'll take my wifes Prius to the Jersey shore and hangout all weekend for $30.00 roundtrip instead of $200.00 roundtrip to drag my trailer to a dragstrip.

Loan me your rig. I will gladly pay for the fuel. lol

If you haven't started on your engine build you could always set your combo as a 383 2 barrel mill with highway gears. I'm running a +.030,10-1, 383 with 484 purple shaft w/3:23 gear. The cost of changing the set up will buy a lot of fuel for cruise night. I may have to scale back our trip to Carlisle this year as we were planning on taking 3 cars up. It is about a 3 hour trip, might have to leave the 67 home and go with the ragtop and the wifes 05Magnum RT.

$5 Bucks a gallon.....Hmmmmmm.

Eat Ramen Noddles and hot dogs.. and keep driving the living sh*t out of my mopars!!!

its on the way up. get ready!
I'm not too happy since I drive for a living. I keep raising my price but eventually the customers are going to say something.
I hate working for free.

I drive an awful lot in my profession too but haven't yet raised the prices to my customers. The last time we saw sharp increases in fuel costs I resisted the temptation to raise prices. This time around I think it's going to be a bit different. If gas peaks at $5.00/gallon it's not going to fall back to $1.65 like it did on the last go-around.

As far as the cars we build for our hobby are concerned and in particular, the OP's question regarding a 383/400 vs. a 318, I don't really think it makes all that much of a difference. Yeah, the 318 will do a little better on gas but how many miles are you actually going to put on it in the course of a years time? Although I do plan on driving my car a lot, the amount of use it will get pales in comparison to the amount of driving I do with my work/daily driver so basically the weekends will just cost a little bit more.

As far a racing is concerned, that's a whole nuther ball of wax. Not only do you have to fuel the car at the track but you have to get it there in the first place. We have no track here on Long Island and the nearest one is E-town, an 85-90 mile ride (one way) for me and with all the tolls and **** I would have to pay it's expensive enough to begin with.

I will cut corners somewhere and keep driving the hotrod.

I'll be trying to stick to local stuff, less then 20miles away... Glad i only work 5-6miles away, But I've been considering getting an old bug or something to restore that gets good mileage.

$5

True comments all. My point about the 318 was I could make the Coronet a daily driver & sell the 2.3 88 Mustang. Save a few $$$$ on insurance, avoid emission testing, & still have the 65 to tool around in. I was going to cam a 400,add an intake & AFB, 68 RR manifolds, 3.23 gear & have some fun. Not a honkin motor, but you have to feed displacement, even if it is a mild engine.

makes a very nice wall paper buddy... Don't really mind do ya? Ron...

Those prices are not sustainable en mass in this country. Things will break; car companies will go out of business, m/c companies will get fat in the black, I'll go without some things; maybe get a Volt?

I'm just going to run my 440 on water (HHO) I've done alot of research on it and I'm almost ready to start buying parts for the conversion.

I should be so happy if I can buy gas for $6 this summer, I guess we soon will pay $9 here in Sweden.

YUP we got it at over $5 bux a gallon and it isnt slowing down anyone! Oil speculators piss me off:thefinger: :knob:but what can you do? I got 26.8 gallons of gas for $147.00 and went to get some booze and spent $185.00!... I think I got 2 gallons? I'm going to start on the high test I think?:icon_weed:
