........... Middle looks like spring from seal is laying on top of crank snout.

My eyes aren't so good, but not sure I see that.

It does look like it's missing the oil slinger.
 
So, what Would cause a failure that fast? It was fine before the cam and I measured with a piston stop and the marks were dead on.
Sustained rpm on the break in and the bolt pushing the inner ring? Only thing I can think of.
anyone have a picture of the back of a tapered damper for educational purposes? BSB67, you are correct in there not being an oil slinger. Didn’t have one and didn’t even think of one during assembly.
 
If you pulled the dampner from the outer ring with a puller you could misalign the two pieces. Hammering on it can distort it also. There's a special tool that really helps with removal and installation.

You should install a slinger if it's missing. And I would replace the dampner. It looks really old and dry rotted.
