When you say the starter nose needs something to hold it are referring to the bolts that would normally go through the mounting holes in the starter then into the bellhousing?

After think as long as the plate was bolt down in starter area it would work. The thing I'd worry about with out the start nose in a bellhousing. The starter may flex the plate and not mesh with flywheel and chew up teeth.
