:argue:Settle the debate of which was faster in the 1/4 mile. Stock from the dealer.. Shooting the breeze with a few buddies..I think it was the 1968 hemi charger, others claim its 1966 427 cobra.. & 1968 Hemi superstock Dart...I thought that the dart was not street legal???:3gears::icon_pidu:
 
The 427 Cobra was way faster than the much heavier Charger. Probably the Dart too. But the Charger was considered as a prodution car as where the other two were not. As fas as productions cars go a few magizines back in the day had the 70 Chevelle SS 454 as the quickiest one. As fas as non-production cars well thats a whole different world.
 
Thought it was supposed to be the buick gsx or whatever. 1970 iirc

Of course the A12 cars!!! But 428 CobraJet Mustangs were pretty high in the food chain too. Also the 435 HP 427 Vettes.
 
Hard to go by magazine tests for such data;the car companies(all of 'em!) sent "ringers" to the car mags that were,shall we say,"refined". Wangers smoked over Pontiac's offerings with 421(actually a 428 incher) inch mills in GTO test cars. Mopars went to Sox & Martin or the Woodward Garage for some tweaks(think 1969-1/2 6-Pack 'Runner),Ford had Carl Holbrook,Tasca,etc. for their goodies. Even the Buick GS455,though a beast without any help,was augmented with some pieces-I know some of the people involved there.

Now,if these had been cars pulled straight off the showroom floor-or better yet,right off of the assembly line-the results may vary. Let the debate continue...
 
Hemi Darts and Barracuda's which were factory produced non-street legal beasts I think ran very low 10's. Which was slightly faster than the cobras and the 454 vettes. If memory serves.
 
Depends on who the driver was and how well the car was tuned. Any given day one car may be faster than another. Also depends on if they had slicks or not. I had a 72 455 ho gto in high school which I still have and the fastest stock car I ever raced was a 69 ss 375 horse nova. I had a buddy that had a 69 rt charger and we ran about even but that nova would beat us 5 car links. Just think of the 375 horse nova as a 70 340 duster with an extra 100 horsepower.
 
I think the ZL1 Aluminum 427 equipped Camaro was the fastest factory produced/factory equipped & also street legal HT/Coupe, with street tires & closed exhaust, the 427 Cobra was 0-100 & back to 0 in 10 seconds, hands down probably the fastest production car in the mid-late 60's, the Race Hemi cars were for non-hwy use only but, many of them made there way to the streets with license plates, street tires etc., The Mr.Norms Dart 440 GTSS were also very quick very low 13's or very high 12's... The 66 Chevy II 350hp 327 L79, was also right there @ only like 2600lbs, with the much heavier 66 Hemi Satellites, low-mid 12's, with Bill "Grumpy" Jenkins & Ronnie "Mr.4sd" Sox driving... The 68-71 GS Buick 455 were like 13.35 et. about the same as the 66-67 Street Hemi Dodge & Plymouth cars were with out tunning & slicks... If I remember correctly the 69-1/2 4406bbl A12 w/Hemi 4spd & 4.10:1 Dana RR's were mid-high 12's with headers, slicks, famed Tom Hoover tunning & a pro driver {I think Ronnie Sox Mr. 4spd} in a Car Craft, Hot Rod, Mopar Action or some other mag. test, low-mid 13's in street trim... The 428scj drag pack Mustangs were Low 13's with out tunning, just like the 69-70 Buick's GSX 455 Stage I & II's 13.15, with there under rated 365hp/520+ ftlbs of torque, the 69-70 GTO "The Judge" 455 Ram Air III & IV were also in the same performance relm...

I have to say the Cobra jet to be honest but, Its hard to pick the all out final fastest when so many were at one time or another in each major manufacturer..60's up to the early 70's takes up a big space in HP.
 
Per the lists out there it appears the 427 Cobra was #1, and 427 'Vette in #2, but I wouldn't call these muscle cars at all, but more sports cars. FYI an A12 RR made #3 at a 12.91 ET.

Fifty specially-equipped "Hemi Dart" models were built under subcontract by Hurst for NHRA SS/B and SS/BA drag racing classes, today these cars (with their sister Plymouth Hemi'Cudas) remain the quickest production cars ever mass produced, with elapsed times in the low 8-second range (1/4-mile) and trap speeds approaching 160 MPH.
 
I don't remember ANY street car that actually got in the 11's. I had a 68 hemi Charger with 4.10 gears and slicks, the best time on it was a 12.02
 
From what I can surmise and have read, plus talking to lots of people who were there [I was a little too young to be in the thick of it] the Cobra would be the quickest off the showroom floor, no tuning etc. They didnt make that much power, but they weighed next to nothing. The big inch high horsepower Corvettes could give them a run for their money IF you could get them to hook up. But those are sports cars, and I assume that we're talking musclecars/full size American here. If not, you have to look at a TVR Griffith - a small English car that had a small block Cobra driveline in a car that weighed about the same as my motorcycle. IF you could get em hooked up, they would outrun the Cobra and have done so. But even Mark Donohue said the things were too squirrelly for public consumption. And if Donohue couldnt keep em going straight...
As far as musclecars, the 69 1/2 6bbl Roadrunner pretty much is the one. Or a Stage III MaxWedge 64, but some might argue that such is not 'showroom' and street legal...
The operative here being "showroom" stock. If you'll allow headers, open exhaust and slicks for instance, then the Mighty Hemi wakes up and takes all comers. Same thing with the ZL1 / L88 -stock and plugged up, a healthy SS396 will outrun it. But let it breathe and its 'Katy bar the door'. those engines were not designed to have exhaust systems attached.
A car that was terribly quick whilst being very user friendly that most people forget is the 69 Hurst Olds. STOCK [theres that word again] that was the quickest RPO car GM made that year.
The CobraJet Mustangs that you and I could buy really werent that quick. typical of Ford's philosophy, they made a batch or two of very 'special' ones that were channeled to certain people to give good race results for good publicity. The regular production units were nowhere near on par with the ones you read about.
The aforementioned buicks and Pontiacs were indeed very quick based on prodigious amounts of torque. But a good 440/6 B Body could clean the street with em!
 
You could add these to the mix too, but they aren't mass produced either... Baldwin Motion Camaro's, Yenco's & COPO Camaro's & Nova's 427 cars also are very quick... But for the "mass produced off the assembly line" 66 Chevy II 327 350hp L79 & the 70 Buick GSX 455 Stage I were fastester than anything else "mas produced off an assembly line", not a special order vehicle like the others listed, there were a few 425hp 396ci 65 Vettes & Chevelle's that were "supposedly faster than any other GM car ever produced, off an assembly line"... But I'm kind of prejudice, I'm all for the 69-1/2 A-12 RR's & Bee's... Remember the Cobras were custom built, by Shelby "not Ford", in a rented Hanger at a LA airport & only 1000 "real Cobras" in total, were ever produced over the years, the 65 Daytona Cobra Coupe was even quicker yet, but only 4 or 5 were ever made... In their day the early 60's 383 2x4bbl, the Long Ram 413ci, the 413ci & 426ci Max Wedges/Super Stock II & III, also the mid to late 50's "Letter" Hemi Cars were the $hit...
 
Way to many things that can make this a good argument. Many cars never even got tested by the mags back then and some had little restrctions from the factory that held them back. I always felt the 62 to 64 Max Wedges were one of the fastest production car ever built. And I dont want to hear that they are purpose built race cars because every Max Wedge built was street legal. I seen Hot Rod go 12.60's @ 112 in a 63 Belvedere Max Wedge low comp 415 hp one with just cheater slicks which the cheater slicks back in 1963 sucked..
Then you have the 64 Hemi cars or as some say the A864 cars. I know for a fact some of them were tagged and driven on the street. In fact one guy ordered a 64 Maxie Dodge but when the car came in it was a Hemi as they had stopped production on the Max Wedges by then. In fact the guy drove it home from the dealer. They were easy 11 second cars with slicks.
You have the 1969-1/2 440six pk A-12 cars thast Sox ran 12.90's in. You may consisder that a ringer car as many were back then. Jim Wagners even admitted they put a 421 in a GTO that they tested and said it was a 389. No wonder none of the owners of that year GTO could run the #'s they did.
The et for the 427 Cobra is 12.20 which is nowhere near what the 68 Hemi Cuda's and Dart's ran. With a good tire they were high 10's right out of the box but most ran mid to low 10's in SS. Then there is a 70 Hemi Cuda that Car Craft went 13.10 @ 107 in and a 70 SS 454 Chevelle 450 HP that ran 13.12 tested by the same mag. Motor Trend got a 13.38 out of a Buick GSX and one mag says the 69 Mustang 428 SCJ ran 13.56. One mag went 13.16 in a 69 Camaro 427-ZL1 at like 116 on street tires and full exh. But with slicks and headers it ran mid to low 11's.
The truth is it just depends on what day it is and who the driver is as there are alot of cars that claim to be the fastest.

I just know the Max Wedge cars were fast and I love them for their cool attitude they have.
And I know in 1963 you could go buy a 426 Max Wedge car and make sure the tune was good. Then slap on cheater slicks and pop the exh cutouts and go run easy mid to high 12's. I just dont feel there was many muscle cars that could do that without headers and good slicks. Its to bad Ford did not put the 427 SOHC eng in a production car as that would have been a strong running car. I really like the Boss 429 Mustangs but they never were really a strong runner on the street. Course the Boss 429 was a basic Hemi race eng and like our Mopar Hemi is shined better at 7000 rpm.
And dont forget the 1971 Boss 351 Mustang that ran 13.80's with a 351 in it.
Many hot 340's but none fast enough to claim the fastest of all in stock form.

Here are some cool advert. & photos with some numbers on some of them these cars weren't taht fast back in the day like they are now with the same equipment the tire tech. was horrable back then, I remember my step father racing at Fremont Ca. in a bone stock, just tuned, 64 GTO 389ci 4bbl w/cut outs & cheater slicks only 13.13 @ 107mph 1966 Stock Class, when the idex was like 14.00.... Remember Super Stock classes aren't factory stock & neither is Stock classes, but they are way closer to stock than any Super Stock ever was...

Sinclair oil, been awhile!, cool, i wonder how many young guys wonder what the device is to open a old can of oil like that.. I remember once reading somewhere that a young guy wondered what the tire iron was, He thought it was some kind of a tool but didn't know for what! That was a long time ago but i never forgot about it, things like this that used to be the norm and the younger generation of car guys coming into the fun seeing these relics we once used.. Probably did the same back then ourselves, years pile up fast, anyone know what year that changed, into the plastic bottles? Mid-late 70s? lol..
