Is there a thread about the bushing that wears out and causes the wipers to be disconnected from the transmission? It's supposed to be an easy fix.

I seem to be able to find the part, but not instructions.
I have 72 and 73 body and chassis books, but it must be in the main FSM.

Thanks in advance!

Well I found the issue, and found the bushings at the local Advance Auto Parts...

However, "easy" was used VERY liberally....easy in theory, yes, but easy in execution HELL NO. I can get the bushing on the motor pivot, but I've removed several layers of skin trying to get the driver's side wiper pivot busjing on.

It seems like if they had made the cowl vent opening about 6 inches wider (and there's enough sheet metal there to do it), it would be MUCH more likely to get the leverage needed to seat that bushing.

Is there a trick I'm missing? Perhaps a "special tool c-xxxxxxx" like a small C clamp or something?

I had to take out all my pivots and linkages and then to get them on the linkages I had to lube them good and use an oversize scoket for a cup and press them in with a vise. Once I had them in the linkages popped right on to the pivot points

I would love to have a diagram for a 73-74 Satty, This is one thing i thought i didn't have to repair and a couple weeks ago they quit, took that plastic piece off the top and see where the arm just fell right off, ive never used them yet and was just trying them out.. If anyone has a diagram i sure would appreciate seeing it, with little wiggle room to fix them it might be easier seeing just how it looks under there, unless im missing something, ill bet ill need to get new bushings, i didn't go into it at the time i found it but ill bet everything's original and wore good..

Yes, this is the arm inside the cowl plenum.
I've had several people say they dissasembled and removed to install, but I don't see how that would be possible.

I think I will try fabbing a small press.
I have a bicycle chain link pin press that would probably be a good starting point.
It's about the right size.
I can test it and do my mods based on the motor connection.

I sure wish they had made these with a clip that installs from the side.
That would be 10 times easier.

Ron there is a diag in the 72 parts break down downloadable at mymopar. If that dont get ya let me know and I'll shoot ya some files from my service manual

YY1 what year and model is that you are working on, I must have missed that info. And you can also press them on with channel lock and a cup.
The same for you, if you need the file let me know.
I trust it is the linkage bushings we are talking about not the set up attaching to the drive motor.

I fianlly got it.

Not as athoritative of a snap as the one on the motor, but I used the wipers intemittantly on a shake down run to test my new master cylinder (still getting rain from Debbie here), and it seems to be holding.

I'm sure it will pop off at 2:00 am when I'm the furthest from home and during the worst rain the car's ever been in :)

I found a postion that let me get a pair of slip joint pliers in and expanded enough to get over both arms- had to have the pliers running parallel with the fender into a bulge in the cowl- then wedged my hand in enough to just barely be able to squeeze them about halfway down the handle. All tis with by face against the windshield and my left arm behind my back, wedged down in the cowl to the point where flexing my wrist muscle to squeeze the pliers caused my wrist to no fit in the space it was in.

WHEW!!!!

hey do any of you guys have a part number for them wiper bushings mine are shot too. thanks

Mine were in a pack with several other styles.
They were in the "Help" section and were $6.

Snoman they are at most auto parts stores, just dont let some rat on ebay charge you 20 bucks. Ive seen them at blow-riley's and poop boys, they were used for so many years and in so many applications.
:icon_spiderman: Ive got some nos ones I'll ley go for the low low price of $129.95 with shipping and handling it will come to just a shade under $500.:icon_spiderman:
Boat payment made this month :hello2:

Those must be HEMI wiper linkage bushings.

I saw those next to the $300 HEMI brake pedal pads that were being sold a few years ago.

bushings

I got some last year at my local Dodge dealership evidently they were used on various models up to a few years ago.

Sorry those are for the 1 of 1 TA but I can do just happen to have a set of HEMI ones that I was saving, I suppose I could let them go $666.00. And thats a real smokin deal the Hemi ones are a Devil to find these days :angryfire:

hi guys i finally got around to getting them bushings and was wondering if you put the bushings on the linkage of the motor or the linkage that goes from wiper to wiper, i put the bushings on wiper to wiper but does anyone have any ideas on how to push the drivers side on, just being a s.o.b. for me..lol... thanks, later

It's a royal pain in the ***, and may involve blood and scraping off layers of skin, not to mention cramping and muscle fatigue.

See post #7.

Just did this repair a couple of months ago. It was not much fun but got er done. Removed both linkage arms and the drivers side pivot only. Used a bolt that fit snug in the bushing with a nut for spacing. Used a vise to press together. Only screwed up one bushing when doing the press work at the vise. Make sure you have extra bushings just in case. The drivers pivot was a big pita to get hooked-up, some blood lost but thats cars. Heres some pix, hope it helps.

I also mounted both arms to the left pivot then installed. Very big pita to get the pivot bolted back in. Hope that helps Snoman.

Wow, you used a vise...and I did it with my hand stuffed in the cowl

Just wait until you try to replace the entire cam assembly on a 73/74 car while still under the cowl.

I did it 20 years ago on my old 74 in the parking lot of my apartment...oof, what a pita.
