Thanks a bunch boys!



So......Deck filler panel. Probably wondering why I wasted my time to write about and post a pic on it. Well, after spending an hour wire wheeling off all the 4 layers of paint, I made it down to bare metal on the whole panel and then acid primed thereafter.

This truely is a momentous feat. I don't think I have reached a section on this whole car thus far where as soon as I start excavating I didn't hit rust, holes, bondo, lead, brass, Jimmy hoffa, grease or a mouse hotel. I'm stunned.

This post is dedicated to the only decent original piece of metal on the car..

It's freekin cold out there in the garage man!! lol!!

Summer aint... hell spring aint even here yet!!

I have a waste oil burning furnace out in my shop and I'm out of oil so it's about 35 degrees out there.

I'll make a call or 2 this morning and see if I can scratch together enough oil for my furnace to get me through "spring" so it's nice to work out there.

Jebus... I've got yards and yards of old paint and bondo excavation ahead of me. I'm bound to unearth some interesting finds along the way. Hopefully I find something worthy of submitting to the national mopology science institute. Something they can showcase in the "early 70's unexplainables" department.

I have sheetmetal to cut, glass to saw loose, oh lordy I suppose I should pull the engine to get the paint right under the hood......

Got some time today to start on the floor pans......

Needless to say they're a little junk after 40 some year of wear and tear

After drilling out spot welds for a short stint, moved on to the plasma cutter to zip out the rest. Obviously I have a bunch of clean up to do as well as patch the torsion bar crossmember.

Got the new pan screwed in place. Fit real good with no modifications needed. Drew on my lines as well as outlined the bottom side around the frame and braces.

I will be using my air flanger along the tunnel. The flange punch has a 1/2" offset, so I measured a line 3/8" down and all the way across from the outline when the pan was in.
That will leave me an extra 1/8" to lay the weld puddle in and have it come out level.
I also cut out some 16 gauge steel out of a template I traced out in that torsion bar crossmember to inner rocker transition and welded in.

Picked up this Snap On Q.D. this week for my air hammer/Chisel this week... Makes the old route of a spring seem like a joke. Works Great!! I''ll never go back to the old bed spring special. Highly Recommend it!!

Hey can I borrow your air flanger? the freekin head fell off mine!!

Hey back over a month ago I scrambled a dana 44 diff carrier in the front axle of my plow truck and it's been sitt'n up on jackstands in the way of my bird project ever since.

Well It took all damn day but I got a fresh lim slip carrier fit up in there and got that POS plow truck out of the way.

Tomorrow, I'll at least get some damn bumpers off my hippie bird.

Yeah Dave, PM me your address and I'll send it your way after I get done with the drivers side. Hopefully by sometime in the next week, I'll have both floor pans all done. I should be done with the flange gun on this car after that. You're more than welcome to it.

Those plows will really throw a whipping to any truck....Looks like the temp is supposed to stay halfway decent here in the next week. Hopefully it will be some good working weather for you

Good thing I made room in the garage yesterday so I can hide from the weather and finally start on my car.

That air hammer coupler looks pretty sweet, might have to look for one of those.

Do you use it mostly for splitting spot welds from structural pieces? That's mostly what I use mine for, removing stuff you can't save.

I used to peal some panels off with mine, had kind of a 3 tooth chisel that curled out a slinky of sheet metal as you pushed it along the length of a panel.

I patched in a couple spots on the Pass. side and replaced about 75% of the drivers side on the outer rockers..Bits and Pieces of their replacement are found pgs 14-18 on this thread.

I would recommend trying to patch them if you can. Starting at the jam, the outer rocker is heavily pinch/goobered welded in between the inner rocker and interior metal panel. The same goes for up front in the hinge area. Real pain in the *** to grind. Another reason, the factory rockers have a 90* angle in the jam where the step down and transition outside the jam. The AMD rockers have about 100* angle. You'll have to relief cut for them to line up with any factory sections. If you install a new rocker all the way across, that extra 10-20* dgrees will add to your door to rocker gap. I had to bend up in a buddy's break, otherwise you'll have to cut all the way across and reweld so they sit straight.,


Wrapped up the rough metal work on the passenger pan today.......

Pretty much templated/marked up the bottom side by tacing the edges of the frame and braces, just like I did the trunk pan earlier in the resto

Lotza wire wheeling, grinding and then a coat of rust bullet, then 3M undercoating in the rails, then weld thru zinc primer on the mating surfaces..

Pan fitted and preped for welding...

I may have asked this or you probably covered it but I'm wondering if you have plans for any sub frame connectors?

You bet Dave! I should be seeing a pair of subframe connectors from Global West hanging 6' out of my mail box some time this week. I also have the torsion bar "T" caps coming in from Auto Rust Technicians this week as well. I did my own repairs in that area, but the caps will just kind of put the warm fuzzy on it. I looked at the Torque Box stiffening kits from a few different places, but decided to just beef them up myself with some 14 guage. Some of the designs for the added supports out there are not well thought out.

Imagine, today's 5 yr old kids will long for the 2010 Charger in the year 2050, sad thing is many of 'em won't be around sitting out in a field waiting for the time to come. Much like us, when we were 5 these cars were everywhere, and, in 1970 you would think the guy is crazy that sais in 2010 there will be these guys out there pulling these cars back from the grave and restoring them...wonder how many people thought about that in 1970?

I hear ya Donny..Back then people just drove the living hell out of them. Only if we all knew what we know now eh? I remember when I was real little our neighbor had a 67 Chevelle SS that he used to put snow tires on drive it through all the slop, slush and salt all winter long. The thing was rusted to pieces and one day got hauled to the bone yard. My mom had a 66' Fairlane back then (flawless panels/body) that suffered a little frame cracking from a death trip railroad track. Next day, dad had it hauled to the scrap yard...real sad.

I'm interested to see where the hobby of rebuilding classic american cars is in 2050. They way things are rolling now I'm not too optimistic. There is a small number of younger guys into these cars like us, but for the most part I feel we are all a dying breed. Sad........

Holy **** Will!! Have'nt been on In awhile but looks like she will be ready 4 paint in no time!! Helluva job! I've been trying to move the hell out but everywhere to rent kinda sucks! Been doing a bit of resto work myself so to speak,playing my guitar again like an animal, and hoping to get my *** back on stage and make some damn $$$ doing what I love doing so I can continue to restore the Mopars I love! I hate seeing any mopar or old american hot rod of any type go to the bone yard.

Heres a weird 1,especially 4 me. speaking of the topic found a 70 fastback mustang I was thinking of saving from the crusher, real solid roller no rust,pretty damn decent interior,perfect dash,good title,ugly puke green! overall solid none the less going to the crusher!?? Why?? Hell if I know? I am about 98% mopar or no car guy,but even I feel bad seeing a perfectly good fast back pony go to waste cuz some dumbass kid lost interest in it!
I have a 4.6 police intercepter engine w/ a marauder air box that my friend is holding onto, along w/ a transmission all w/ paperwork proving it was a test model ran 4 25k for police demonstrations, all computers everything, 4 $450 out the door to me! Gets me thinkin' maybe a 4.6 70 fastback stanger w/ a 5 speed may make a decent driver?? Better than it biting the big one and rusting to nothing buried under a pile of scrap!? Well anyway we can't save em all But U are doing a helluva job Will!!
