just rebuild my engine its got eddy 84cc heads kb pistons heaman headers..what would be the best carb for normal street use (4 times a week driver wont be seeing any race tracks etc (and one that does no need constant tuning)thanks

It depends on what CFM (Cross-Flow Microfiltration - Cubic feet per minute , a measure of volumetric flow) that your needing for your 440. Also take in mind that you will also have to decide if your wanting it to be a manual choke or electronic. And depending on what state your in, which ever carburetor is street legal and meets Pollution Controlled Motor Vehicles. I'm also rebuilding a 440 right now, i haven't got to the carburetor question yet so that's the best i can give at the moment.

I've tried a couple of Holleys, a Demon, and Edelbrocks but non of them have been as good as a well tuned 850 Thermo-quad! I have not had any performance OR reliability issues since i started using what the factory offered.

Just my opinion based on what has worked the best for me over the last 25 years of owning my Road Runner.

interesting advice. actually, the old 440 avs is a good driver/performer; i like'em.

..im really new to this..i just want something that can give me a bit of performance but good reliability(dont want to have it tuned all the time)and about the 850 Thermo-quad do you know where i can get one?thanks

the engine came wit a holley carrb but i dnt know what model it is?/its got the numbers holley 12 r 4770 on it??my mech took it apart today and said everything looked all good but i needed to buy a rebuild kit and stuff but he also said just buy a new one as he dint want to assemble the thing....

I'm not sure if your stuck believing an ol Wives Tale or what.... I dont "tune" my Holley all the time...... :argue:
I dont think others are "tunning" the Edelbrock AVS style carbs all the time either.....
The Thermoquads are available at just about any discount auto parts store, because they were thrown on nearly everything throughout the 70's and 80's with a four barrel application. You would have to do a little research to find which vehicle came with an 850cfm or so, then ask for that replacement.
I would buy something like this for street driving "Holley 0-80508S - Holley Model 4160 " available new from Summit Racing or Jegs.

im going to prob go the holley you mentioned ..how are Edelbrock 1407 Performer Carburetors??are they any good??

750 on a stock 440....no more than 850 on this one and it'll run fine

and I use proform carbs...nice carbs

Very happy with the Edelbrock is I suck on there.. plug and play car runs great. I am using an Edelbrock air gap rpm intake as well.. great combo for the street

440 carbs

I have a rebuilt Thermoquad from a 440 and a rebuilt Carter AVS that I want to sell. PM me if you're interested.

Your mechanic took it apart and said he doesn't want to put it back together? Sounds like you need a new mechanic! :angryfire:

Thermo quad will be the most reliable or you might think I am crazy but a rochester quadrajet is even better street carb. I have used on all types of cars and they never ever fail. So thermquad or rochester and both are cheap.

well he will but he sys putting a new one on is better and i have to ship all these parts off from the us 69$for the rebuild kit but 70$for shipping...so might as well just get a new one or semi used:

The OEM Thermoquad is a good carb for a stock or very mild engine but if you have a radical cam I'd think twice about using one. They used to make a competition series TQ but have no idea if they still do. No matter what getting jets and metering rod springs may be an issue, so again, if your engine is close to stock and pulls good vacuum at idle (13" hg or better) then it should work fine. Another thing to consider is if your mechanic doesn't want to put together a Holley he sure won't want to put the TQ together!

Get a 750 AFB (Edelbrock), bolt it on and enjoy a well running engine. These are great carbs and tuning parts as well as instructions are easily available.

I use an 850 Holley DP on my mildly built 440 and it ran great. I still use the same 850 on my 493 but I had to jet up alot. Ron

listen to meep meep,go with the edelbrock(750).holleys are great carbs, but most of the ones you will get will require a great deal of tuning to get good street use out of.tqs are alright, but a bit old school to use a stock carb off a diff eng and car.use the modern carbs available.insidently to figure carb"size",just multiply cubic inch by max rpm and divide by 3456(440 x say 5500=24200000 /3456=700.23).since that is for perfect volumetric efficiency,go a bit big for the street at 750.
hope that helps.i have ran all carb setups you can imagine for steet and track and it seems edelbrocks work great on the steet, and holley on the track.
when it comes down to it this question is like asking your favorite food, you will get all kinds of answers.

On my 440, I should have a 1050 Dominator to get everything out of it. Right now I have an 850cfm Double Pump just like 383man. It is NOT enough for my combo, so you can see that their are variables that change things from build to build. I suspect that 383man could also use a bit more carb too, which puts you into the Dominator style carbs with an adapter to 4150 square flange.
I still don't understand where this "tunning" bussiness comes in more with a Holley VS any other carb. You'll need to understand that the manufacture will jet the carb according to its ability to flow a certain amount of air, and then supply the correct amount of fuel to achieve a proper A/F ratio. This can be wrong for ANY carb manufacture out of the box for any particular engine. That leads us to the Power Valve, and that will remain the same after the first calculation. Just get a vacuum reading to size this correctly. Now adj the idle mixture screws for a clean combustion at idle and your done. I cant think of any other carbs that wouldn't need as much detail spent on them to be as accurate as the Holley with the affore mentioned setup process.
Well,,, maybe a Predator, but I hear they didn't work so well.... I have no personal experience with them however. Just a friend that had one on a Pontiac,,,, but he was doomed from the begining since it was a GM product... LOL!
Now for racing,,, You'll find a whole host of tricks and tips to follow... Some easy, others not so easy. Pluggin Power valves requires larger jets and less driveability. Different metering plates with idle circuits modified, quick change jet features, etc etc... In other brands, youll find plugs added, meatering rods swapped out, jets changed,, etc etc...

You have a set of heads that's good for generating over 500 horse power with the right combination of parts. I had a set of stock max ported heads that did and the Eddys you have are even better than what I had. We need to know what your combination is to make a good assumption what carb you should have. Now if you plan on driving slow, then go with a small carb but if you like max performance, then you'll need a larger one but we need to know what your combination is.

x2 What those guys said.... :) I run the Eddy 800 AVS and works for me for now maintenance free. Starts right up. But like so many mentioned what is the rest of your set up?
