How fast is a 6.1 conversion?

Anybody know what a good cam for a stock 5.7 would be? I want a bit of a lump to it just to give it that evil sound and maybe a few extra ponies. This will be one of those things that I do down the road after I get the car drivable...but while I have all of the minds together?

Oh and for what its worth, I could give a rats a$$ whether or not its a complete hemi-sphere...its made by Mopar, has valves directly across from one another, looks like a hemi, and runs as good as one....seems to have enough characteristics to be worthy.

To advise you on the right cam for the 5.7 I need to know a few things.

How much does the car weigh?
What trans/converter?
what gears?
stock heads? stock intake? stock exhaust?

Ok let me put some perspective first...car is not running or drivable yet but when I get this all done eventually I plan to add a cam to the package...so some of this will be speculation:

Car should weigh around 3400-3500 lbs max.
Trans is a 5 speed manual (NV3500)...yes I know I am going to break it
Rear end for a while will be a 2.94 but eventually the plan is a 3.55 or 3.23 sure grip.
Stock truck intake, Stock heads and will have home built long tubes going to 3" headed to a pair of magnaflow straight thrus dumping out the sides in front of the rear wheels.

This is all the plan so far...trans I have, rest is a plan. Sometime down the road whenever I destroy the nv3500 or when it starts to feel the pain from hemi abuse I intend to swap over to a TR6060 but in the interest of getting this thing drivable and fun I have to wait on that.

That easy to spec a cam for. Let me know when you are ready and I will design something for you.

Sorry. as a modern Hemi owner this thread is just a piss off. Not really a Hemi. Right.

Further, anyone chopping up a 71 Super Bee to put in modern running gear is making a mistake. Put them in the /6 and 318 cars. Baloney. Then we don't hear from the OP for a year. What does that tell you.

No modern motor will have the Panache of a big block old school Mopar. Ever. Nothing wrong with them, wrong application.

Looks like someone pissed in your cereal today :blahblah::blahblah:

Modern Hemi can create more power that a big block period!

Smaller cubes, more power

So you own a modern mopar, big deal. I have owned 7 modern mopars. Turbo cars, blower cars, stroker motor cars. Some of the folks on the forum might take offense to this, but I can stroke a 6.1 hemi to 426, put a moderate cam in it, make 700 horsepower and drive it anywhere. Just because you have a modern hemi doesnt mean you know anything about them. I do love a big block, don't get me wrong. Grew up in a house that saw 383's, 413's, 426's and 440's come and go. But to hell with a carb and distributor.

Big motors are awesome. Just don't see many of them making 700+ horsepower on pump gas in street cars. Not very often anyway

I think its a personal choice of anybody doing their car the way they want. Personally I think a one of a kind 426 hemi car with 20k miles on it restored to original showroom shine is a worthless vehicle and I would sell it immediately. Granted its a great machine with huge collect ability but expensive to insure, impossible to feel save driving and purely worthless to a guy like me that wants to drive it A LOT.

Now if you want big block power with reliable fuel injection, parts availability at any parts store and 20 mpg then get a 3G hemi. if you want 8 mpg and big block rumble then pick the big block....its personal choice and i applaud both. But your opinion is just that...YOURS

You know the 426 gen3 I put in my charger made 550 to the tires, got 19mpg through an auto/3.73's/3600 stall, and I drove it everywhere. It sounded like a big block too. You can have it all, if that is what you want. Just takes a big wallet.

BTW it ran 10.88 @4400#

Just for grins and giggles, in defense of the new "not so hemi" hemi design, the geometrical configuration of a hemisphere is 1/2 of a complete sphere. That being said, neither Gen 1 or 2 were full hemispherical shapes. If you put two truly hemispherical shaped combustion chambers facing each other, it would look like the mold for a round ball. Gen 1 and 2 do not accomplish this, so they are no more "hemi" than Gen 3 so out goes that arguement. I guess one could argue that they are half of an oblong spheroid, but that would make them hemi-roids...

It is pretty funny how defensive people get about the new hemi's. One of my good friends just went 8.9 at 158 a little while back in a daily driven 371 cubic inch 4400# charger. Show me an old hemi that can do that.....I love the old elephants. I respect the **** out of what they were able to do back then with the technology of their time. New hemi's are amazing though. Wait until the aftermarket really catches up on the new hemi.

8.9 at 158mph in a 4,400lb 4 door charger. It sounds like the aftermarket has caught up on the new hemi, lol.

Exactly !!!! No disrespect to the old power mills
But when smaller motors that can idle and still be efficient are around its hard to put an old motor in a
Resto mod or pro touring car

I do still like the " look " of the old mills in the engine bay however after driving it around a bit it gets old fast .........

Agreed. If the aftermarket would make intake manifolds, fuel rails and throttle bodies cheaper so we could justify buying them we could have the best of all worlds. For example I want to put 3 Magnum 360 throttle bodies on a plate bolted to a indy mod man intake. But between the cost of the intake, the throttle bodies, and having to run a custom computer I'd be out $1500-2000 before I made a 6-pak air cleaner work.

All we had to do was buy a 300C SRT8 and after a month of ownership my next beater will have a FI 6.1 HEMI. The fuel consumption issue that I have with my current beater's 440 4-barrel is no acceptable considering we can make the same power and get 20 MPG.

Huh? Try that again and word that into a coherent thought please. Seems to be some missing in the middle.

What part do you not understand? I like the 3G Hemi in our 300C STR8 and am going to use one in my next driver/beater car I build. Kind of like your car, but I will use it year round. My current beater has a 440-4 barrel and the fuel consumption is horrendous.

We sure do have a flock of internet tough guys with cars that don't run on this site, don't we?

The small block Mopar 5.7 can make nice horse power, but your 440 makes why more torque. You just can't replace that with a small block.

I guess I am lost on buying an srt8 and then somehow that translates into a hemi powered beater? If you think an SRT8 is a beater then you have more moolah then I probably will ever have.
