Maybe???...Marla

here is a quote by Morgan Freeman that hits the nail on the head:
Morgan Freeman's brilliant take on what happened yesterday :

"You want to know why. This may sound cynical, but here's why.
...

It's because of the way the media reports it. Flip on the news and watch how we treat the Batman theater shooter and the Oregon mall shooter like celebrities. Dylan Klebold and Eric Harris are household names, but do you know the name of a single *victim* of Columbine? Disturbed
people who would otherwise just off themselves in their basements see the news and want to top it by doing something worse, and going out in a memorable way. Why a grade school? Why children? Because he'll be remembered as a horrible monster, instead of a sad nobody.

CNN's article says that if the body count "holds up", this will rank as the second deadliest shooting behind Virginia Tech, as if statistics somehow make one shooting worse than another. Then they post a video interview of third-graders for all the details of what they saw and heard while the shootings were happening. Fox News has plastered the killer's face on all their reports for hours. Any articles or news stories yet that focus on the victims and ignore the killer's identity? None that I've seen yet. Because they don't sell. So congratulations, sensationalist media, you've just lit the fire for someone to top this and knock off a day care center or a maternity ward next.

You can help by forgetting you ever read this man's name, and remembering the name of at least one victim. You can help by donating to mental health research instead of pointing to gun control as the problem. You can help by turning off the news."

As usual, and expected, the debate going on around here and the country right now is all about guns, guns, guns. Also as usual, and expected, the person who committed this horrendous act was a person with severe emotional and psychological issues. Issues that were well diagnosed, well understood, and well known. The common thread to all these attacks isn't the weapons used, it's the people committing them.

I've heard a lot of people observing how these things never happened in the past, and we didn't have assault weapons back then, so the guns must be the problem. Putting aside the fact that there's no evidence he ever used an assault weapon, the reality is our people have had access to military-grade firepower for as long as there's been firepower. The Model 1928 Thompson submachine gun was made for ranchers and anyone could buy one. Veterans brought back tens of thousands of war trophy weapons during and after WWII, and gave them to their kids! There was no real regulation of these weapons until 1968.

What is different between the current times and the past is how we deal with people with these severe physiological problems. In the past, these guys would have been institutionalized. They would have been locked up and kept away from the general populace so they couldn't harm anyone. We knew they were threats and they were treated accordingly. But then more and more, we saw various groups working hard to stop that practice. It wasn't humane, it wasn't fair, it's too expensive. And from the 1970s to today, we've seen more and more psychological problems downgraded so they no longer require someone to be forced into treatment or institutionalized, and instead their treatment and monitoring is left to their families, who often lack the time, resources, or training to deal with them. So why should anyone be surprised attacks like this happen? 30 years ago, this kid would have been safely squirreled away in an asylum, just like the Colorado shooter, the Virginia Tech shooter, and the rest of the lot.

We don't need gun control. What we need is to get the crazies under control, just as our fathers, and their fathers, and every other generation before has done. And maybe if we weren't wasting trillions of dollars helping those who could help themselves, we would have the money to adequately deal with the people who can't help themselves.

That's not liberal enough for Morgan Freeman. I'm callin bullshit without proof.

My first reaction "this is horrible".

My 2nd thought (probably not justified, but we'll see) a mall shooting a few days ago, and now a school shooting. Wonder if obama planned this to help ban guns? (needless to say I don't trust our pres. at all)]

i recall you calling PABSTER a "douche" for something he said....that there ^^^^^^^. is probably THEEEEEEEEEEE dumbest thing i have ever heard....even tho we all pretty much hate Obama......that was a "douchebag' thing to say....

You know I actually had about 4 paragraphs worth of a response to this. But I figured it just wasn't worth it. I had you on my ignore list before, and I took you off after your temp. ban. Figured maybe you weren't such an ***, and changed some. Good to see you get to go back on that ignore list.

Oh, and I wouldn't say we all hate obama. I don't trust him and don't want him in office. And I question his every move and agenda. Good to know he's got people like you to stand up for him though.

By the way Pabst called himself a douche, I merely told him that the radical comparisons he made seemed to confirm his initial diagnosis. I didn't condemn him for concerns/questions/thoughts on the situation.

Something to consider:
From the NY Times: In Australia in 1996, a mass killing of 35 people galvanized the nation’s conservative prime minister to ban certain rapid-fire long guns. The “national firearms agreement,” as it was known, led to the buyback of 650,000 guns and to tighter rules for licensing and safe storage of those remaining in public hands.

The law did not end gun ownership in Australia. It reduced the number of firearms in private hands by one-fifth, and they were the kinds most likely to be used in mass shootings.

In the 18 years before the law, Australia suffered 13 mass shootings — but not one in the 14 years after the law took full effect. The murder rate with firearms has dropped by more than 40 percent, according to data compiled by the Harvard Injury Control Research Center, and the suicide rate with firearms has dropped by more than half.

Actually, please don't consider the above post. The first tip off that the information is false and misleading is it comes from the NY Times. The second is the contention that somehow a huge number of suicides were being performed using rapid fire long guns!

It is true that Australia's National Firearms Agreement did not end gun ownership, it did greatly curtail ownership of everything from BB guns and paint ball markers to selective-fire weapons. It's sort of like Maryland's gun laws... they didn't ban guns, they just banned shooters. The NFA placed so many limits of who can own guns that few people can.

As to drops in rates, the homicide rate using firearms has dropped, but the what NY Times doesn't mention is that the overall homicide rate has remained constant. What the NY Times also doesn't bother to report is that assaults on seniors have been steadily increasing. Why? Because a gun can be used to rob/assault pretty much anyone, but attacking a strong, healthy, person with a knife or blunt instrument poses a lot of risk. So as guns became fewer, criminals started turning towards easier prey: the elderly.

Lastly, the vast majority of suicides in Australia do not, and never have, involved the use of firearms. For men, the majority use hanging and drugs, and for women it's pretty much exclusively drugs, so any decrease in the use of firearms will appear to be significant because there weren't that many to begin with.

Drving into work this morn I heard Morgan Freeman's publicist released a statement saying Morgan Freeman did not say this & they are trying to find out who started this rumor.
I do have to agree about the media not reporting these incidents so much.

How many children are dying each day because of illegal drugs. Not in a group...but how many in a day? And this is not to even approach the thought that I am trying to lesson the tragic incident of last friday. I'm still sick over it.

its nice to know i am amongst some 3rd graders. ignore list?...WHAT ARE YOU....12 YEARS OLD ? saying that ANYONE....would have this DELIBERATELY performed to make a point is still the dumbest thing i have heard you say. and i have been paying close attention to you and the stupid things you say...if anyone needs to be banned...ITS YOU MY FRIEND ! i think you and your "HOLIER THAN THOU" attitude needs a vacation!

as far as sticking up for Obama...i dont...i think all politicians are asses IF YOU HAVE BEEN PAYING ATTENTION. you pay attention to the fact that i was banned, but you dont pay attention to ANY RELEVANCE....and put me on your "ignore" list?????? i think we know who the immature person is here....MR. 3RD GRADER!

please...by all means finish your other 3 paragraphs of what you were going to say. i cant wait to hear what "words of wisdom" you have to offer after the dumbest comment i have heard yet about Obama staging this whole thing. i bet you have ALOT of smart things to say after that, DONT YA Einstein!

My question is how did he break into the school, nobody has said how he did it.

To me, this all boils down to one thing. The decline of the family unit. Whether you believe in The Bible or not, there are some extremely valid points in it. I like where it says to "forsake all others" regarding whom you marry in the eyes of the Lord. That does not mean to ignore everyone else. It means let no one come between the husband and wife unit, because you are now as one. That even goes for your children. I see so many parents and grandparents saying things like their children and grandchildren are the most imprtant thing and such. This is simply not true. Without loving, caring parents, there is no family.

My question is how did he break into the school, nobody has said how he did it.

shot the glass door and let Himself in. See P1

AND...did the Pres also say last night that "hundreds of children are dying each day because of gun related incidents? "
AND...the idiot on CNN last night said the shooters gun had a 100 round "clip"....??

RAT....buddy...pal.....do you guys know WHYYYYYYYYYYY i got banned....well im gonna tell ya....and i could possibly get banned again but im not one to hold back and you guys know that.

i got banned because i had mentioned in a post that i am an Atheist. and there is no need for talk of religion like so much is going on andddddddddddddddd...according to the rules of this forum...IT IS PROHIBITED. ,,but yet thats all i have been seeing in ALOT of posts political posts or not

now....if i got banned because of it...you all should be also....RIGHT MODS ???? now...if we are going to play here....LETS PLAY FAIRLY. now again...if someone wants to blow the whistle on me...GO AHEAD! all ya gotta do is klik that little triangle over there .

i have been labeled as a trouble maker in these here parts...but in reality....you guys aint following the rules....and heres what got me banned i said.." if you all dont have to follow the rules...i see no need why i should have to".BAMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM.....2 weeks off. if ya wanna talk about God and religeon....i suggest talking to the MODS and have Joey make a church for you all to attend ! thanx for listening i do appreciate it!

I understand.....but I didn't say you had to believe. I simply said The Bible has good ideas whether you believe or not.....which is true. ...and if I get a ban for professing how I believe, then it's probably time for me to move on.

RAT..that wasnt actually directed at you.....i have been all over this forum today and i have seen religion mentioned more than not. not only by you...but by alot of people. and yes...i agree the bible has alot of good things to abide by, not because theyre in the bible...but because its morally right .i have read it a few times and fully understand it. the point im making here is ...i had to pay the price for the "sins' of others....sound like a familiar story ? i had to run to NAPA and get a starter and i fully expected upon my return to get my wrists slapped again. im surprised...but the day aint over yet.

i have spoke my mind about alot of things.....im not a trouble maker...im honest just like Richard Cranium...but you all think he is funny just as i think he is funny. some people cant fully deal with the reality that we all dont think like they do. i will NEVER criticize ANYONE FOR THEIR BELIEFS, because i dont want to be criticized for mine...and i dont push my beliefs on anyone and i dont want other beliefs push on me. i dont think thats alot to ask. many confuse being an atheist with being a devil worshiper....thats far from the truth....how can one believe in one, without believing in the other. i believe in neither but i dont post on every post i write "DARWIN ROCKS"...or "DARWIN BLESS YOU"...because its unnecessary and people dont want to hear that....just as we non believers dont want to hear about your beliefs. and i DONT hold grudges. once again RAT...this is not aimed at you personally. thank you!

If you FULLY understand The Bible, you're doin better than anyone I know. I actually think the mods are being kind and letting us have some leeway in light of what's happened so that we can get something out of it......and I for one appreciate that.
