thinking im figuring out the chatter from the engine.....

so i have a stethoscope that i used to listen around the motor while it was running and the chattering is coming from the bellhousing. well i can say that when i pulled the motor there were marks in the housing directly below and above the flywheel. i grabbed the input shaft and tried to see if it budges and i really couldnt move it, but im thinking the chattering is from the torque converter bouncing up and down. so my question is... where can i find an input shaft bearing for a 727 searching the web and found nothing. any ideas?!
 
Try wittrans.com. They've had all the rebuild parts I need for a 904 and exploded diagrams.
 
You may have a loose or broken flexplate, there are no input shaft bearings on a 727, just bushings. I would think that if a bushing was bad enough to cause that much wobble, you would be leaking tranny out of the bellhousing. I hope that helps.
 
ok so here is what i have. i pulled the motor on my 74 roadrunner and rebuilt the 360 motor. i took the small block flex plate off and put on a new big block flex plate and a torque converter out of a 70 satellite with a 440. Before mating the tranny with the motor, i noticed fluid from the front pump, thinking it wass the seal, so i replaced the input shaft seal...before i pulled the motor you cn here something hitting the tunnel above the transmission. when trans was out, i noticed the trans had gouge marks above and below the torque converter. so some how the torque converter is wobbling

the 360 is externally balanced u cant use a 440 converter if it is an internal balance 440 because it will vibrate ur guts out,, dont ask how i know, this happened 25 plus yrs ago to me!!!! i put a 360 converter back in and it smoothed out but i did have to change the flex plate cuz the vibration broke it in several areas when i ran the 440 converter

that would make sense but what i dont get is that i had the motor running for roughly 4 hours before this sound started happening. so i think ill be buying a new harmonic balancer, torque converter and a full trans rebuild kit. and goin from there
 
Before you do anything, I suggest you check the torque on the 4 flexplate/tq converter bolts.
If you find any loose, I would suggest a little thread locker be applied before retorquing. HTH.

already checked that, theyre all tight. thinking ill just rebuild the tranny and throw in a brand new torque converter and hopefully thatll fix it
 
Yes you have to make sure you use a T/Converter that is made for that motor. All cast crankshaft Mopar engines I have run across have external balancing. That is done with a special harmonic balancer, and a special T/C. All forged crank motors are internally balanced. So the T/C is zero balanced. You cant mix the 2 types in any combination. The one exception to this is the 440 6 Pak engine uses a special harmonic balancer. It has external balancing due to the heavier con rods.

The 1970 440 torque converter from the Satellite would have internal balancing. Because that engine uses a forged crankshaft. You can tell the ext bal T/C because it will have 1 or 2 weights welded to it.

ig block and small block flex plates are different! Also Hemi is different from Big block.
 
so this past weekend i installed a new torque converter and flexplate for the small block and a new fuel pump as well. and the sound is still there. i was thinking harmonic balancer...so for shits. i took it off and started it real quick and still made the noise. so its behind the timing cover, hopefully not further than that
