I'm looking at a manual 996 and toying with buying it. I have an empty garage and really need a fun car to fill it. I figure Porsches are just like any other performance car.. as long as the maintenance is kept up it should be gtg. And the IMS issue for the 996s has already been addressed on this one. And the 996s are probably the most affordable of the 911 models (I am meh on the headlights though).

I used to have an '04 M3 that was a blast to drive and was actually fairly practical.. except I hated that it was a BMW. Everything was ridiculously expensive, and everywhere I went people assumed I was loaded/snobby. Nope! I wanted to yell I JUST HAVE A LOT OF DEBT!

Anyway, curious if there's any knowledgeable Porsche/Mopar owners on here.

I had a 83 and a 84 Porsche 944 in my teenage years. They were a blast to drive. Front engine/rear transmission made the thing agile and corner well. Wish I still had them. I didn't do anything outside of general maintenance on them.

Does 1/6th scale count. I wouldn't mind a 1966 906 Carrers 6, 1969 917K in Gulf colors, 1972 917/30 or a 1976-81 Martini 936 but the Le Mans and Can-Am cars are way beyond my grasp and too rare to track.

I used to have a 914.. One of the cheaper models but fun to drive for sure..

Find a shop first.. Not that you are going to need it, but just to ask best year and if they know any cars to buy.. I love Porsches, driven a lot of them, the 944-951,968 were my favorites. But I have a thing for 911 Turbos (930's)

This has a 67 911S t-axle. Watch out....any air cool porch is thru the roof...this axle is worth about 12 K

Verde....You can build a B Bod to out carve a 911 easy peasy....much better behaved beyond limits of adhesion.......911 's are handfuls beyond the edge. B with an aluminum small block will kick their collective asses.

Good call on finding a shop. I remember back when I had the 914, it had some issues but I couldn't find anyone to work on it except for the local dealer. We know how expensive that was going to be. I finally found a reputable mechanic that knew a little but wanted to increase his knowledge and we were able to work out a good deal for both of us.

Yeah, VW built, best handling, gentle mannered of then porsche's...the cheapest.....come full circle, of all the 4 whl drive 911's yata.....todays cheapest porch, the mid engine
Cayman/Boxters are the best handlers. 911 is a tricky asd engined whore beyond the break. Dangerous....not for neophytes.

I almost bought a 904 once.....watched it run a slalom.....raspy *** exhaust note...did its job. 917. would be the **** for sure. Dont care for 911's

I've come close to buying a few 914 models, and really wish I'd bought the 912 or '76 911 targa I considered when they were under 10K!

A friend had a 924/944 in the late 80's and had a lot of issues.

Another friend had a 928 in the early 90's and also had a lot of issues.

Almost bought a 914 Six once....had been turned into a 916 clone...big boxed fenders(glass unfortunately). Sorry i passed onit....was a 2 litre six.
I worked at a shop that specialized in building 935 slope nose clones....all metal. Bro had a real deal 930,,,,,,had a vernier control for the boost, which was kicked way the hell up.....was making about 450 hp.
It would definitely throw & plaster You back in seat.

Air cooled and naturally aspirated is the way to go. I think the 911sc is a descent deal and should go up in value. Not my cup of tea but handles like a dream and rides like a rock. Stable until you over do it then reacts violently. For the money the Super Careera gets my vote.

I had a 1976 911.......pretty easy to work on as it is just a VW on steroids........135 mph across the San Rafael bridge (SF Bay Area) to Sausalito, no problems!

Exactly....meant to be driven by ovetsteer, but its tenuous edge.......Stable until you over do it then reacts violently. For the money the Super Careera gets my vote.

...and I also almost bought a baja bug with a porsche 6 in it.

That was a fun car!

996 is one of the best generations and the best bang for your buck. Like you said keep up with maintenance and you should be gtg, you can beat the crap out of them on the track and around town and they should last a while.

I've owned a few, 20 years ago, all pre 1978 911's & Targa's
Owned a few Dune buggies & Baja Bugs too, a couple Porsche powered too
1 was Blown Judson vein/flap style Blower, fun rides, different to drive too...

All were Air cooled

Did it have the Porsche box, or VW?
Swing axle or IRS? What size Six?
In Az in 70's, i helped a Friend put together a 69 Ghia with a Corvair.
Had to flop the ring & pinion since Corvair runs counter clockwise. It was pretty fast, built the motor some,,,fabbed a 4 bbl manifold and stuck a 600 on it.....but the GM 215 aluminum V-8 's were the cats ***....we did a lot of Bugs and Buses with those ....the bus conversions really brought a transporter into real world....the IRS buses,,,,,, run a car gearbox, run down the road cruising 85 mph @ 23 mpg.....and accelarate uphill.
One Friend put an Olds Toronado 455 engine/trans. in a Porsche' 912.....sounds bad huh....i was at an auto cross one day with a Super Vee, last yr of aircoolers(John Ward car)...having clutch slave problems.....a new owner of the Toro-912 was there....He took Top Time of Day!......He learned how to drive the *** end of the car well, beat out some hard competition.....truth often stranger than fiction.
