Rock Island .45 1911 style

Good info all. I have a Sig P238 which I have to say I am not impressed with, more so the mags than the gun itself. I have a 220, 226, 225 as well as the 320 and 238 which all came about by accident as I was never really a SIG "guy". I really do like Glocks overall but then I have shot a ton of them, competed with them, etc.

I will not dive into the long gun side as that is truly the forte, suffice to say I have many more of them than I do pistols. :lol:

Decided on the 220 45 APC,nothing wrong with the Glock,just don't care for plastic guns.I like auto,s but prefer revolvers,have two Ruger 10" in 357 Maximum,shoot one other never been fired.

Mama Mia! What'd that set ya back?
Field grade- $850(?). Can’t remember, but just wanted a ‘genuine’ gov’t pistol. Rebuilt by Marines in Albany,Ga. in ‘78. Oldest is still waiting with a 14k number for a chance. No way I’m going to change a thing on it. Colt frame, Remington slide;;; have to figure out variations on thumb safety,slide stop,grip safety,hammer,etc. Very happy with it. All gov’t , and that’s the whole thing! Better than melted down to a lump. Still have fond memories of M-14’s in boot camp!

After all this discussion, the question I don't recall seeing is "Is this for self defense or just a backup sidearm?"

"Yes" :lol:

While we're at it, I'll toss out that old question that applies to cars as well as guns here:
What firearm(s) have you folks traded/sold off over the years that you'd dearly wish to get
back now?
I have a couple, both gone decades ago but huge regrets now:
- S&W Model 29 44 Magnum, black as Dirty Harry's was
- Dan Wesson 44 Mag w/2" & 6" barrels, nickel
Man, I miss both.... can't afford such nowadays.

"Yes" :lol:

None? Real lucky I guess.

I did the whole "simplify the ammo" thing a few years back, got it down to just 9mm, 12ga,
22LR, .556/.223 (and of course, 30-30 for the ol' Win94).
That's great and all, but it sure takes a lot of really cool firearms out of the mix, such as my
beloved old 44 Magnums.

If you are looking for a good standard reliable sidearm then I would suggest a stainless steel revolver and at the minimum a 357 magnum. A misfire is easier to handle with a revolver, stainless weathers better and the caliber to take down anyone or thing. My main is a S&W M29 44 mag in stainless.

What does your "main" mean? Are you actually carrying that thing daily?
I'm sure I didn't mention "looking" for anything....but I am sure I just mentioned wishing I hadn't sold
my own Model 29.
You read that post, right? The one you just quoted of mine?

Yes, carry when "needed". Just giving some insight to all here especially the initial person questioning a purchase.

Yeah this thread went a little off the rail and wide but oh well... LOL

The only gun I really regret selling/getting rid of is that Detonics just because it was cool. I was very lucky in that I worked in the firearms industry for over 12 years and kind of still do to a degree, it gave me access to many things and subsequently I collected quite a lot, some might argue too much.

I'll fix it! The next 2 pistols I purchase will be a RIA 1911, and a RIA M206 snubby. I just sold my POS, Jam-O-matic Savage 64.

I just bought a Springfield RO 1911 compact 45 ACP. Very nice gun ! But my Sig P220 45 ACP is my favorite to shoot. I also agree with a couple guys a 357 revolver is a gun to have.

A couple of years ago I bought a Colt Defender (.45) and traded a 1911 ,45. It was just a parts gun, but was parkerized with plastic maroon grips and even had the lanyard loop on the but. Without looking for engravings, it looked exactly like a government issue .45. Still kicking myself in the *** for that dumb *** move. :(

I always like the Springfield 1911's, I built quite a lot of them at one point. I also built a lot of Norinco 1911's believe it or not. They were cheap and we would gut them and put better internals in them, checker them, recoat them and sell them. All built up they were still cheaper than many of the competitors.

I have never owned a .357 (revolver or otherwise), did have a Ruger Blackhawk in .45 LC which was cool and currently have a Ruger 9mm revolver as well as a Taurus .38 (my wife's guns).

I recently obtained a P220 as part of a trade, I have to say it does shoot pretty well and surprisingly controllable for a .45 ACP pistol.

Twenty five yrs. ago I traded a 1911 A1 U.S Government Property marked including original holster and two magazines that my brother brought home from overseas when discharged from the military back in the 50's (you know how he acquired it ) for one of the Ruger 357 Maxie's I have now.Tracked it down about 10 yrs. ago,only 18 mi. from me,been trying to get it back ever since but owner won't give it up,one of my biggest mistakes,today it's a 2K gun but would just like to have it back because of the history.
