Need help! Weiand 6bbl intake does NOT fit under my 70 N96 hood. Options?

I'm having trouble discerning the price from the ad, but if it's over $500, it's not really right for what I decided on. I want a "taller power bulge" or cowl style hood that will accommodate the factory oval air cleaner width and height of course. That way I can still have the Air Grabber door, but I'll probably have to use the A12 fresh air base and rubber hood seal.
It does look like it would work, and I'd buy one cheap just to have a hood for tuning and track trips until I can decide if I want to use the Weiand now or only once I get the 540 stroker build going.
Thanks for the interest. The hood is $450.00 by itself plus transportation. I can lay a straight edge and take measurements on the inside of that helps.

I've been in the same room as mass specs, but I'm the guy working on the chemistry analyzer. I like the simpler stuff, higher volume, low overhead, low risk.
I would like to learn service and repair on Ohmeda anesthesia machines, but I'd have to add that to my liability insurance, and I don't know how that would affect the rate.
So many machines, so little time.
I can't complain as my learning curve was vertical, and I climbed that mountain.
The day to day "common" equipment seems to be keeping me going, but it would be nice to make a few really big pops every year.

I'm not sure what you mean, but I would have either the N96 airbox and oval metal filter or the A12 fresh air setup, and the rubber hood seal. F&B may have some ideas.
I'm calling it a night, but Thursday I am going to try hard to get the height of the throttle bodies and the "plate" from F&B to see if that would work with my current N96 hood. I'm skeptical, but it will be very close.

Just figured out how to find this conversation. lol. I'm plugging along. Last couple of years hasn't been fun with all the moving and I still haven't recovered (nor found or set up all my tools). We have to catch up. By the way, can't help but notice the biomedtechguy handle. Tell him my specialty is rebuilding SCIEX turbomolecular pumps. He may know what those are.

OK, different stuff. I'm just an independent shop fixing turbo pumps that are used on mass specs. I like your business model and thinking where did I go wrong? lol One has to be crazy to work on turbos. Balancing flexible shaft equipment that spins up to and over 60,000 RPM. Anyway, tell your lab friends to send their pumps to Sertec, Inc.

Next time I'm there I will. That's a tiny, occasional part of my work now, but early on I was subcontracting for a chemistry analyzer company, and that provided some much needed work at the time!
 
Well....
I checked with Bruce at F&B and the throttle bodies are a good bit shorter than the carburetors.
2⅜" from plate that tops the intake to the top of the TB:

I could save 1" if Bruce fabbed a top plate to replace the Weiand top, but that would take a LOT of plenum volume out, but let's just go with that for now.
Have to have an air filter, so the factory element is 2"+2⅜" for the throttle bodies, let's call that 4½" and subtract the inch saved by replacing the top plate of the intake, and add ¼" for the replacement plate. That is 3¾"....
If I cut out the hood bracing so the skin of the hood was all that was there, I would have 3¾" of space. That is just cutting it too close! Even if I get an inch of extra space by using a 1¼" K-member spacer to lift the body relative to the frame, that would be taken up by the top and bottom air filter element base and cover. SO CLOSE, but I think that the smartest way to achieve the Weiand and the Air Grabber air door/scoop is to just get the space I need with a glass hood and a raised power bulge.
 
You may defeat the Weiand advantage if you choke the air flow with too small of a air filter. I see a lot of cars with restrictive filter area-for style I guess.

I considered both of those factors, and I appreciate you bringing them up.
It's just too close to try, and it would mean I'd have to drop about $5K by the time I got an in tank fuel pump along with the hardware (EFI system) Weiand intake mods (Injector bungs, polishing) etc.
and I will probably replace my 3/8" line with something larger, but I may use the factory 3/8" as a fuel return line. I wouldn't even be able to attempt to use my 6bbl carbs, and as great as the F&B EFI will be, I think that's more than I want to spend right now.
If I get a 'glass hood, with a "power bulge" that will allow the Weiand and Holley carbs to fit, and cut in the Air Grabber, when the time comes for the 540 stroker, I won't have to worry about the Trick Flow 270s raising the intake a fraction of an inch too high, and when I can drop the $$$ for the F&B EFI system, Bruce can just make the height of a component make up the additional height requirement.
That all adds up to this hood having to be a nice quality piece, with provisions for the factory latch, and either factory hinges or those billet aluminum aftermarket hinges, and to be able to be painted to a show quality finish that holds up. I am pretty sure I'm going to match the current hood stripe theme.

I finished installing the Edelbrock/Chrysler aluminum 6bbl intake and Holley carbs, factory style setup, and fired it up, all good. I have to be able to move my car in case the swamp decides to come calling with the storm heading our way in the Gulf.
I test fitted the A12 rectangular base, and then I found the 70 N96 hood mounted airbox that I have is maybe ½ to 1" wider, so the A12 setup isn't as "compact and space saving" versus the 70 airbox and metal air cleaner base as I thought, so I took measurements from the passenger side edge of my hood to the edge of the airbox and it looks like the raised "cowl/power bulge" is going to have to go vertical at 13"...the body color painted surface from the side to the first stripe is 11⅞" so that seems all good.
The height of the factory bulge is 1" and it looks like mine will have to be 4" above the flat or 3" taller than the normal power bulge..
Not too bad.
Final measurements will be made before I have a hood made or buy one.
I am definitely good with this solution. Air Grabber door will be cut in, and I'll have both the N96, AND the Weiand 6bbl intake, and I can work with my Promax modded Holley carbs until I can get the F&B direct port injection 3x2 throttle body setup.

Here's some pix in case someone else gets hooked by the Weiand P3690982 6bbl intake, like I did, like I AM, and I've just consigned myself to that's how it's going to be. I am VERY HAPPY to say that I have a friendly, reliable, and VERY experienced source to polish the aluminum intake, (and make provisions for the injector bungs and Max Wedge ports IF I haven't already had that done by the time they get the intake). If it looks like the Promax modded Holley carbs are going to ride atop the Weiand for a while, I may hold off on having the bungs welded in, I will have to discuss those processes and see if it's better to just plug the injector holes and have all of that done at once.
Here's some pix of the various fresh air parts as I was putting the Edelbrock/Chrysler aluminum 6bbl intake back on to be able to run my car if I have to move out of harm's way.
Also for those of you who have been KIND and PATIENT enough to follow along on my drawn out adventures, I am FINALLY getting the car to the shop on June 10th to get all of the various parts and systems installed that was supposed to start in FEBRUARY, so I want it to drive on its own power for that too.
These pix were take w/the "factory" 6bbl dual plane intake on it, but were still helpful for measuring for the new hood. I will reinstall the Weiand intake to do a final measurements mock up before I send the measurements to the hood manufacturer. It's entirely possible that I may be able to use an "off the shelf" hood from these folks, in the 4¾" size, part # RR-785. That's ¾ taller than my calculations, but I'll keep that in mind when I take my final measurements.
This first picture is when it became clear that the A12 base really doesn't save me much space over the airbox and metal air filter base and cover:

It will be my match for brand new aluminum, Alien Silver, with a clear coat. It's overwhelmingly the most popular choice for intakes.
Though new, its already had some mods done for EFI before it arrived. It's coming up in line soon! :D

It's beautiful, and her work and attitude is top notch.
I have someone who committed to doing multiple mods to the Weiand, so I'm going to let them polish it too.
When the time comes, I'll post pix and more about it.
