CHP Dumps Ford Patrol Vehicles

the 1980's Dodge Diplomat And The Plymouth Grand Fury were the Best.
I hope your joking.... 60's & early 70's Dodges were great pursuit vehicles.... The 80's were an embarrassment... I worked at the local Dodge dealer as a line mechanic in the early eighties... Those cars were slower than my beater daily driver....

the demo derby guys buy them all up around here.
( western ny state )
mostly for the x chassis platform setup.
90% of them run but have bad transmissions, the cars are noted for trans failures.
these guys yank that all out and drop in 10 grand worth of chevy ls motors in them.
then go beat the snot out of them.
usually for a couple of hundred dollar prize money.

at least that saves some of our mopars from getting smashed up.

A 170 HP 318 in a 3800 lb cop car?

They sure sold a lot of Diplomat/GF cop cars.

F bodies, too.

It's not so much the size but RWD that is required by most state and some county/municipal agencies.

Still, there are a lot of Taurus and Impala FWD police cars in use as well.

When I started , they had a few of these left, so the grand fury was an upgrade.

The only complaints I had about them from a mechanic stand point was , oil consumption issues on higher mile/hour units, rear end collision had a good chance of recreating the pinto effect.. the ford fix was put a plastic cover between the pumpkin and fuel tank.. they did that for interceptors only . The town cars and grand marks were the same identical car and got not fireproof recall!! No joke! The only other common issue was the intake spitting water and dpfe system as they got some time on them.. they were a solid car, crashed and held together well. Dad got the X plan on his loaded out merc for 21-22grand years ago...They were a solid car for the money and bread and butter for Ford.. Sad to see a explorer replace it gotta watch those you may get gassed in the cabin — not sure if that’s been taken care of but I do believe they were recalled for that.. correct me if I’m wrong.
