The fastest piston fighter in WWII never got to see service. The P-51H Mustang was indeed built (555 of them) and shipped to squadrons in Japan, but its 487 mph. top speed wasn't able to be used as Japan surrendered before it had a combat operation.

That plane was built on a crash program to take on the speed and altitude of the B-29. Ironically, the Superfortress was not used in the European battles.
