Just sandblasted my data plate today to clean it up for a repaint and found handprinted, indelible numbers, likely factory, added to the plate maybe before painting. They are separated pretty far apart and has anyone else found something like this? Number 3 and then 12 with another digit after that but not clear. Might be a 1. I was thinking maybe an inspectors mark too. The marks resemble a marker I use to mark metal. Is that enough marks in one sentence? Anyone have an idea about these? The data plate was previously decoded before removing the paint.

I forgot to add the picture.

Also, were these usually painted along with the car or bare metal? Seems every one I have seen is painted but the cars had been repainted too.

I think different plants did them differently...... the experts here know all about it

I thought I had a guess but zero real knowledge..

The rumor of cars ordered by guys who work the assembly line being able to have options added without any paperwork on the job...

How would you relay those added options to the workers on the line without raising any flags?

Every station looks at one of two sources for build info, the broadcast sheet & the fender tag...

Early in the process the fender tag is the main source, later the broadcast sheet

Add a few codes in colored pencil to the fender tag & when the car gets painted the evidence disappears..
Accept the codes don't seem to add up

j3 = 543 upper window trim which sounds a post car, no post body Chargers

t1 = 691 Sold Car "Expedite"

u2 = 692 Paint & Trim Edit Waiver If I'm reading it right it appears to be a white car with a red interior, shouldn't need a waiver...

Correct on the colors. If the fender tag is painted when the car is painted...then those numbers would not have been seen later on the assembly line. The only "different" options on the car are a 4-way flasher toggle, the e-brake red alert light and a light in the center console and trunk. Maybe a different wiring loom???? I read that some of those options were done at the dealer. So I am going with 'Meet me at 3 and I will have a 12 pack of beer".

Does L3 T1 V2 get you any good options ?
Might not have been room the write it under the letter to be clear what extra options you wanted ?
