I guess I'm guilty of bear baiting.

If I have some leftovers I put them out on the back porch for the raccoons, foxes and coyotes. Last night after browning a bunch of hamburger I poured the grease on to a dish then put some stale flour tortillas over the grease to make a tasty snack. The food was gone this morning but the neighbor's bird feeder was demolished. They could see the top of a bear's head on their wildlife cam. Another neighbor up the hill shared a video of a mama bear and two cubs. I've heard BBQ grills attract bears. So my treat probably did too. The top of my grill has had a big bear paw scratch mark for months. Sorry, I didn't have the cameras out last night.

I may be feeding bears. Don't tell the neighbors.

All the more reason not to leave out leftover foods and even grills, instruments for cooking, etc. You may be living in an area where wildlife lives along with you, but why bring about such chances and also contribute to your neighbors also having to deal with it? I have Coyote problems here where I live, and lately they have been spotted climbing over 8-foot fences to hit backyards and such. A few have been shot and killed and then dumped over in BLM land areas for the carrion scavengers to feast upon. Some neighbors even leave out cat food for the strays, and that also invites them, along with occasional Cat fur remnants, as the Yotes feast upon them along with small dogs. All the time, there are postings for this small dog or cat that is now missing on stop signs posts and such. Just makes no sense at all...cr8crshr/Bill :usflag: :usflag: :usflag:

We used to have some free range house cats in the area. No more. Any sign posted about a lost cat was put down to a fox attack. Our neighborhood is called High Meadow at Fox Run. The High Meadow name s a subset. The land was owned by a fox breeder, I suppose for the fur trade. When he sold it for development he just opened the cages. We have foxes of many different colors. If you've never heard a fox scream it's quite unsettling. It sounds like a woman being killed. We used to have a Mountain Lion but I guess he moved on.

I saw the video with the mama bear and her two cubs. It was the middle of the day which surprised me. I noticed a Magpie was harassing them. The Broadmoor in south Colorado Springs is a 5-star resort. They have fancy golf tournaments there that occasionally are halted for bears to move out of the way.

Thats a rabbit being killed.

Little different than leaving garbage out on your deck like a landfill for scavengers.

Be careful with doing that kind of stuff. You might start attracting rats .

The last time we had a bear was over a year ago. He knocked over the trash bin and scratched the metal BBQ lid. I put the memory cards back in the cameras so we'll see. About six weeks ago I went downstairs to get something to drink and there was a raccoon just sitting outside the sliding glass door waiting for a handout. I threw some old bread slices out for it. Not really scared of bears but lions, yes. I think most of them are on the other side of I-25, about 2 miles west where the Rockies start.

You can see how quickly the mountains pop up.

Still not sure what killed the deer out at the ranch. It was just bones when I found it. I know a bear got a llama at the neighbor's ranch then came back the next night and killed the other one. I see people walking their dogs at night in our neighborhood. I don't think I would do that. The neighbor next to us thought the bear got their bird feeder at 1:00 am last night.

Th wildlife officials say if you have deer you will have predators. We certainly have a bunch of Muleys. They stroll around with no concerns about people or cars. My daughter practically walked up to some. I think animals trust women more than men. I'm really careful driving through the forest at dusk when they start moving around.

I've mentioned the ground hogs here. You see them 3' off the side of the road standing up like a merkat. I don't think you're allowed to hunt them. Then in the mountains proper the ground squirrels will come right up to you looking for a handout. The Magpies are the best. On the decks of a ski resort people hold a french fry up in the air and the Magpies swoop in and grab them. Our Magpies are not a-holes like the ones you have in Austraila.

I don't think I've ever seen a rat in Colorado. Maybe it's our lack of insects at this elevation. I see very few insects here. (Except the Miller Moth hatching where the swallows go crazy eating them. I made a post about that.) We don't have fields of grain here either.

My wife puts leftovers out in the daytime and lets the crows have it. We don’t leave stuff out at night.
