Borgeson Update

Hello all,

Just a month or so ago I installed a Borgeson power steering box in my '68 B-body. I retained the existing Saginaw power steering pump. The other day the weather allowed me to take it out on an extended cruise up and down a local mountain highway. The steering feel was more precise than the previous Firm Feel unit, BTW. Just before I got back home I noticed a reduction in power steering assist. Upon pulling into the garage I checked the temperature of the power steering pump, and it was nearly 200 degrees.

It dawned on me that some folks noted a loss of power assist if the fluid gets too hot. I also recalled that Borgeson recommends a power steering cooler. I had thought this might only be necessary if I did autocross or something of that nature. Clearly that was a wrong assumption. So I have a universal style cooler on order and will install it in the return line from the box to the pump; I would expect this to solve the problem.

Just an FYI for those who might think they don't need a cooler.
I just put in a Lares 11033 box with a filter. I checked the filter after a road test after installing the box and found the filter was pretty hot. I want to add a cooler, what cooler can I use that will look somewhat stock and is easy to get?

I could be mistaken, but I don't think Bergman modifies the pump. When he sent a replacement for mine, it was shipped straight from the supplier and didn't go through him.
thanks, good to know. His website says the pump is modified to work with the Borgeson. Maybe he's not the one who does the modifying.

If you want something new, there are numerous choices.
I like looking for cheaper options like stuff in the junkyards. ALL the Mopar minivans and PT Cruisers that I've seen use an inline cooler like this:

They mount right here:

They are really simple and only need to be mounted where they can get some air around them. It does help to have them in the path of air but even if they are under the battery tray, they will still shed some of the heat. Sometimes a difference of 15 degrees can be enough.
You can buy new ones like this one from Dorman....

I'm told it is under $50. The junkyard ones were ten bucks each. I grabbed a few and keep them for future projects.

I've seen some pictures of a cooler on a 73 Challenger with 340 that gets mounted on top of the power steering pump. I was trying to find something like that, but to no avail. I think I will get one of these, I've seen them for around $40.

You drilled into the battery tray, is that the two bolts under the battery terminal?

I didn't drill the box at all.. the 2 bolts you see in the back go into the fender apron (stock) and the cooler is mounted using the holes the braces from the factory go to... i just bent the bracket on the cooler to make it work.

P.S. i don't run a shroud (no need to) so it gets plenty of air.. would still be fine with a shroud i think.. it drops 15-20 degrees in>out

Wow, that's awesome. The setup should really be the same for a 67 Charger. Thanks. For 31 bucks you cant go wrong.

yup.. and with the battery in and all that you don't really see it.. I also tend to take my car apart a lot so one less thing to deal with :)

Original mopar one fits nicely. Not cheap but is newly produced.

Now that's what I'm talkin bout. You have a part # for that?
Get ready for sticker shock. The OEM reproduction was listed at $400 from Glen Ray radiators.
It may be an excellent exact reproduction of the originals but holy cow....you're going to pay for it.

Icetech had sent me what he did, with the hose its gonna only cost me around $40. He mounted it below the battery tray. I'm on board with that.

That is what I did for an installation for a friend. I had 3 of those junkyard minivan PS coolers and mounted one under the battery next to the frame rail.
I like that reproduction one but the cost is a deal breaker for me.

Add the filter... it's cheap insurance to keep the fluid clean....

I’d be careful about using a filter.
In theory, it is a great idea but I’d be concerned about the burst strength of the filter. Those used in fuel systems with carburetors are likely rated under 15 PSI of pressure. What pressure is in the return line?
I don’t know but it would be helpful to have that information. It would be a pisser to have a filter burst, spraying power steering fluid under hood. I’d think that could be a fire hazard.

Hadn't considered that.. the filter supposedly can handle a constant 200psi... i can't see the return being near that since it's just a open line into the pump pretty much.. but never know. So far no issues, will see what the future holds :)

I used a filter from Lares. It’s a metal filter. That won’t be bursting on me.

That would suck. I put in a new box from Lares and used their filter also. Nice metal case, the hose will pop off before it would burst.
