1972 charger with a stockish 440/auto. want to turn it into a street/road course car. So one option is to do all the standard suspension stuff, build the motor, swap in a manual tranny, replace the brakes, etc... pick away at it for a few years, end up spending north of $20k and still not having everyhting be perfect but a neat driver anyway.

OR (and here is where the bad idea comes into play)

C6 corvette donar... for about 10kish you can get the whole drivertrain with suspension, brakes, etc... Tons of work involved including modifying the body/fenders due to wider track. BUT! when youre done, you have corvette brakes, manual tranny, IRS, considerably lighter weight and more "reasonable" motor, and better weihgt distribution with the tranny in the rear.... and of course you can do all the corvette mods for suspension, brakes, whatever.

So you end up with a considerably better platform for roadcourses and a very unique build...

obvious cons
-what happens to the rear seat with the transaxle? cacn it be salvaged?
-no more big block :(
-gm powertrain in a mopar?
-TONS of work
-probably even worse resale (do i care? i dont know)
-a lot of issues would be sure to pop up and cause lots of greif
-big $ investment up front. 10k donar plus probably 10k in misc. items?

I'll second the "terrible idea.

These suspensions are one of the best and are popular swap into almost anything. We have been working on installing C4 Knuckles, UCA's and brakes in our '70.

Suspensions and transmissions of any manufacturer are OK with me. I have trouble with and would never put a Chevrolet engine in my Mopar.

These knuckles (spindles) solved many problems in our build.

1 Lowering. 2 Modern (BIG) disc brakes. 3 Front steer rack ready.

If you go ahead, know that the key is a deep back spaced wheel to get the contact patch near center of the steering centerline for 0 scrub.

Just put in an Alterkation and call it a day, and as a bonus, you can save some money.

I guess you could keep the 440 and the tranny in the rear would help to offset the weight...

does this help anything for anybody? Then sell the LS2 and try to recoupe some $ :D

Oops, forgot about the rear. Get a heidts or something similar.

Engine, go all aluminum 6.1 hemi, tweaked of course and the masses will kiss your feet, lol!

If it is a whole car your getting all that stuff that really adds up, nice driveshaft, master cylinder, brake flex lines, mufflers etc. The engine and trans should net a good price and any thing else you could sell making that 10K more manageable.

Heidhts IRS 8K + Alter K 4K= $12,000 dollars.

IMO I would just buy a mustang. Cheap and already setup.

IMO installing a GM motor in a MOPAR is sac religious.

Although IMO, any Charger after 1970 is an ugly bananna looking tank, so butchering it up wouldn't really affect it.

Now I'll await another warning from Tallhair for voicing my opinion. Lol

...or buy a 3-5K C4 and put in a 383 SBC.

..and if you want a unique body, a Ferrari body kit.

Less work, better fit, and hey Ferrari is Mopar now.

For 5 grand you can get a pretty decent C4, the C5s are still pretty spendy. There's cheaper and more effective ways to get into racing...80s Porsche 944s go fairly cheaply, Miata spec-racers can be bought fully outfitted for what the donor C6 would cost ya. Even the later Camaros and T/As are a pretty good bargain considering what you get for your money, ie: LS engine, 6-sp, 4 wheel discs, and a ****-ton of aftermarket doodads.

If you still want to cut up your Charger, Google SRT8 Mirada and check out that guy's build...pretty major, and that's using conventional F/R drivetrain hardware.

A super-handling gen3 Charger is a cool idea, I just don't think its feasable with the C6 Vette drivetrain. That being said, ANYTHING is possible with the correct infusion of cubic dollars.

talk to these guys:

http://www.protouringmopar.com/forum.php?

If I was building a strickly roadcoarse/autox car, it would be gm or toyota drivetrain all the way, small, all aluminum v8, great out of the box hp, then Move that engine as far back as possible for better weight distribution, ect ectI'll stop there for now :)

Did they make Marijuana legal in Minnesota?
