Ok the car was sitting for a month outside with a cover on it. it was running before then sometimes a little rough but running.

I went to go move it and it wouldn't start. Battery is new and it turns over first a little but then it just cranks.

I then tried to put starter fluid in it starts for a second then dies. Then I put gas in the carburetor the same thing.

I checked the see through fuel filter I don't really see any fuel in there.

what is the next step instead of guessing. I have not worked on cars that much so I really don't know what to check next and what I should do.

How can I check the fuel pump?

Does it have gas in it? Thats the first thing to check. Then make sure the fuel line is clear. Blow through it if need be. Then ,if its not getting gas, i would say the pump is shot

what Hemi Rebel said. Fuel, spark and compression is what is needed. (in no particular order)

To check the fuel pump. remove line at pump going to fuel filter. Place end in jar or bucket and crank engine. As long as there is fuel in the tank and no obstructions in the line coming from the tank you should get fuel. If there is no fuel while cranking, place your thumb or finger over the end of the hose and try to feel if there is pressure pumping against it while someone cranks the engine.

perhaps someone snuck in and siphoned off your tank.

I will try this weekend... the problem is I don't have anyone to help crank the engine while I check. my wife hates me having this car and I don't even want to ask... I will try the bucket. how hard is it to change out a fuel pump? I'm pretty handy but never did it before

Then I suggest going to your local auto parts store and pick up a remote starter. Lots of uses.

Fuel pump is two bolts and a couple of hose clamps. Easy.

The sock on the fuel pickup may be dirty if your not getting fuel to your fuel filter

Jump started it? lots of seemingly good batteries are dead

Put 5 gallons of fresh gas in the tank first....

Yeah I put 5 gallons of gas in the thing and it started up after a spray of some starter fluid....

UGH.... I know it had fuel in it when I parked. The Fuel gauge was broke since I got it. I guess I need to try to change that out first. But you guys were right. Fuel, air and spark...

I knew I was missing fuel but had no idea because it never actually ran out of gas as it was just sitting.

Been there done that.....

Glad you got it figured out and thanks for sharing. Too many people don't come back to report what they found so the next guy can learn too.
