The 340

Very good read ... I've upset a few buddies with my 340 on a few occasions ... buddy with a 440 2x4bbl 68 roadrunner asked " what the hell is under that hood ?" ! Another buddy with a 428 69 Mach 1 was pissed when I walked away from him, now he wants a stroker motor ! ... I love my rpm happy stock bore 340 !

340's ran great in stock form.....but I've never seen an engine that would come apart so easily....and in so many ways. It was an over-stressed 273, with better heads. We had one that the whole pan rail was cracked, except for the a couple inches on the front of each side. Granted, we were very hard on them....but it wasn't like a B/RB motor that would stretch a rod bolt/spin a bearing. We had 340's have failures from top, to bottom.

I have to say I have never had any issues with a 340 and I've had several. For an A body car, they can't be beat. It was a much more balenced package than a big block for an A body and I've had em pull away from a lot of big blocks. Awesome engine!

Got my first Duster 340 at 16, first Mopar I ever owned, 51 years old now, I have that car today still. There is not a day goes by that someone doesn't tell me a story at a car show or gas station, about how the cars were faster than the competitors.

Any 340 car I ever rode in impressed me, never believed the 275HP rating. If you read the whole article you will notice they used the smaller automatic camshaft. If they had used the stick cam the numbers would be even better.

We have 4 small blocks in various stages. 450hp, 475hp, 600hp, 850hp. All 4 have stock cranks (2 are 360 cast, including the 850hp). All have stock blocks. 3 have run stock rods, including the 850hp when it made about 700hp. Never hurt a rod, crank, or a block.

Had two 340 cars many years back both stone stock and both ran great.
one was a 340 4 speed 70 cuda & a 71 RR 340 A/T.
I have to agree on the underrated HP #s They both seemed a lot stronger than the comparable 327/300 and 350/300 chevy engines.
