Up grading to a Borgeson steering box, with a question on the factory coupling removal. Will the coupling slide up the steering shaft far enough to clear the steering box input shaft or what is the secret to separate the two? The roll pin is out.

thanks in advance

I don't think it will. It will depend on where column is bolted down in its up and down travel. You may luck out and find column all the way up. How's your luck? Mine would require removal.

You will likely have to unbolt the steering column from the inside lay it and on the seat so it can slide it into the interior compartment enough to get it off the steering box shaft. It has been a while since I did my '69 Charger, but I just did the manual steering coupler on my Barracuda. It's easy though...

If it is like my Barracuda,.... two bolts at the bottom of the column hold a retaining ring to the floorboard, then three bolts out towards the dash hold a support bracket. You may or may not have to take out the 4 bolts that hold the column to the support bracket. I had to on mine to have enough clearance to pull the steering column back. The support bracket hit the dash and wouldn't let me pull it out far enough.

Oh,.. and there should also be a little dash trim piece under the column needs to be removed so the column can drop (2 or 4 screws hold it to the dash).

You can probably get by without removing the steering column but you will have replace the coupler with the replacement unit that works with the Borgeson since it mounts differently on the gear box. Here is a pic of the one you need to adapt to the Borgeson. No other fabrications needed. On my 68 Charger, The Borgeson gear box did not line up properly inline with the steering column so I added a shim at the outer mounting bolt on the K frame to bring in in line.

Thanks for the info and pics. So far it seems to need the column loosened up as it just won't clear the end of the shaft on the st. gear box. I did get all the parts ordered- Borgeson gear box, coupler and hoses ordered.

As an after thought. How do you like the Borgeson feel versus what you may have had before? I am told the Borgeson will eliminate any / most of the slop that is in most of the B body steering and am thinking of going that route myself. Any pitfalls/ hints to make the swap smoother and worth the extra money and time? Thanks gentlemen!

I like it and would recommend if you are in need of a p/s box change. The feel is just as they say, more like cars today. Still easy to steer and turn the wheel but not as easy as when you could steer with just your little finger in the wheel. The box is a little bigger at the corner closest to the number one header tube so on a Hemi you have to dimple it. Other engines may clear easy.

I just changed mine this past year. I will say be careful with the coupler and collapsing the column, those old plastic pieces inside the column are old and brittle. Making difficult for the coupler to go back correctly. The column can be fixed if it does, just an added step..

I used the Firm Feel over Borg.. no regrets. Works very well and huge improvement over old!

Good luck!

The Borgeson coupler works exactly like the stock coupler. You may be thinking of the universal jointed piece.

Maybe. This is what I was thinking..

I know the guy that had messed with the steering boxes on my car, the messed around, banged around and at some point collapsed the column. I had to repair to put back..
