I know the 2 engines externally are the same and everything should swap over fine. However my question is about the torque converter and flexplate. I do know the 5.9 Mag is externally balanced and the weights are on the flex plate. I have not pulled the 5.2 yet but I assume there are no weights on that flex plate. My question is can I used the 5.2 torque converter. I know the PCM will need to be setup. But just need to know if I can use the torque converter.

RockAuto shows the same converter for a 46RE.
If you have a 42RE, you should think about switching to a heavier transmission.
You may be able to find a PCM from a 5.9L truck.

Good information. I will see what transmission is in it.

On the Ram you can pull the motor and trans all at once if you take the front core support out.
It's not that bad, just kind of scary because they are heavy.

I believe the same year engines use the same torque convertor...

The 5.9 came out of a 98 and the 5.2 is still in the truck that im swapping engines in. I looked on Autozone they show the same torque converters for both years and both engines. 5.2 and 5.9 both call for one part number is 787 the other is 5444LS and both years use the same.

Those are magnum engines, not la, so they might both be internally balanced......but don’t quote me.

318's are internally balanced, 340, 360, 400 and 440's are externally balanced .

360 magnums are externally balanced, but differently than the LA 360's. Easiest way is to use the factory flexplate that came with the 360 mag. there are companies that make the flexplate as well

Out with the old 5.2

Yup bolted right up. The torque converter was not weighted but the flex plate on the 5.9 was.. So its all good just need to bolt up the torque converter, exhaust and put the radiator and hoses back together and it should be ready to fire up.
