2000 stall converter

Will I be all right with a 2000 stall converter behind by 340 with a 509 cam?
It will work if that's what you mean... you might wanna post the rest of your nfo though like weight, gear.. desired driving style that sorta thing..

I would go bigger, the fti 9.5", you can't even tell it's a higher stall til you stand on it, really nice to drive. I have a 3200 right now and a 3800 waiting for my next motor..

(PTC is also good at a good price, FTI was a joy to deal with though.. so they got my business)

To me you will be right at the bottom end of your torque curve. Once it bites you will drop below that curve at take off.
A factory 11" is pretty close to that 2000 number.

I looked at the FTI web site and it appears they are GM guys. I'm a Dynamic guy but, for street use, almost any major brand will work.

Not sure how they are gm guys when the make converters for ford/gm and mopar... they would be fools to not make gm tc's though.. why do the smallest market segment when you could actually grow and make money? :)

I saw no reference to Mopars?

Will you be alright? Sure, it will run and move. Will it be a good combination as far as sharp performance? Not at all. A 509 is a fairly large cam, for a small cubed short stroked motor. Throw an extremely small 2000 converter, and you have a package like a turbo waaaiting to get into the torque band.
Factory stall with the small factory cam was like 24- 26 or 26- 28

In a word, no. Something in the 3000-3500 range is what you need. What rear end ratio do you have? If the combo is mismatched the performance will be underwhelming…

The stock 340/727 stall rating was over 2000 so the bigger cam will want more stall.
The LA version of that cam was a 292/508 if I recall. The listings for camshaft specs often have suggestions for stall speeds. I'd bet that they will be well over 2500 for their recommendation.
Too low of a stall rating will make the car a pig out of the hole. You could crutch it with more rear gear...like a 3.91 or 4.10.
The '508/509 cams didn't idle well, they needed rpm to run strong. Often times, as the cam was ready to come on, the stock heads were running out of breath. With better heads and headers, a 2500 to 3000 stall and 3.91 gears, the combination will perform.

go 3500.... when in life has less been better?

2000 is way to low of a stall. I’ve run the 509 in a 340 and a few 360s. It doesn’t come on until close to 3 grand. It’ll be a pig with that low of a stall.
