295x65x15s on my 1965 Belvedere

I ended up going with 235x70x15 Coopers on the front. These tires are 28 inches tall, and roughly 9.3 inches wide on a 15x6 rim. I had them mounted on my old school American Racing wheels. In the last photo, I cranked the torsion bars up about 1.5 inches. The tires fit with no issues, and seem to be great on the front of this old car.

So, final tire sizes....

Rear - 295x65x15 on a 15x8 rim with 4.5 inch backspacing.
Front 235x70x15 on a 15x6 rim.

I hope this helps anyone wondering about fitment on a 65 Belvedere.

kick a$$ ...

I have been wondering about tire size and what is the biggest that will fit on a 65 Belvedere. After reading so many comments about 255's being the biggest, with an occassional 275 being the biggest, I decided to find out for myself. I did find 2 posts of people that fit a 295x65x15, so that was my goal.

Here are my photos of that tire (Mickey Thompson 255508 - Mickey Thompson ET Street S/S Tires) mounted on 15x8 with 4.5 inch backspace rims (Wheel Vintiques 63-5812042 - Wheel Vintiques 63 Series). The previous owner of my car rolled the fender lip, but I am sure they would fit even it the lip was not rolled.

Now I need to finalize the fronts....

Hopefully this will help someone who is wondering if these tires would fit.

This is pretty much what i would like to do with my '62... just curious if anyone knows if 62 is pretty much the same as 65 for clearance? I have a pumpkin with 4.57s and would like to fit 30" if i can to tame it down a little bit :)

I have 10.5/28x15 slicks on a 62, (basically a 295/305x60) with plenty of room for a 9x30, but I moved the rearend back an inch.
Stock 62 location looks too far forward in the opening to me, so moving the rear put it where I like it, and gives extra tire clearance at the front edge.

just curious.. can you move the rear back just by drilling a new hole in the perch?

When I bought ss springs to replace my stockers, I bought the ss hanger kit too, which it turns out I DIDNT need. It also appears that someone had swapped 21"dodge springs into my Plymouth at some point.
The ss hangers moved the rear WAY back from where I wanted it, so I just redrilled the hangers.
Just make sure the driveshaft is long enough.

Yes and no. Yes the wheel houses for 62-65 are. But not all are the same as tolerances differ car to car.
The wheels and tires from my 65 fit my 63 but the passenger side rubbed on my 63's outer upper wheel house
driving thru dips and drive way rises.
Also you have to figure the stance height. There was 1 1/2'' difference between the 2 cars as the 65 sat higher.
Not much difference but enough for the tire to rub on the 63.

Anyone know what size these may have been?
Those could be as much as 30'' tall. Most likely the Mickey Thompson ET fronts would be close at 29/4.50/15.
Not really a legal street tire. In the 70's you could have bought 30'' narrow bias street tires.I had some in 1976.

i'm running 7.60 moroso on super tricks up front. not that much fun on the street.... i only use them for going to car shows. i run 7.10 on some keystones when i just want to cruise around in between shows.

Same MT 295/65-15 on a 10” wide rim…but springs moved to frame and mini tubs…could’ve went even bigger but it’s no race car!B12F3DEE-7090-40A7-B955-FBB1C2226BEF.jpeg

I've had both of these wheels/tires on the back of a few cars:
M/T L60-15 15x8 4.25 backspace
Cooper 275/60/15 15x8 4.5 backspace

64 Belvedere with a later 8 3/4 - both fit no issues
62 Dart with the stock 62 8 3/4 - both fit no issues
64 Fury wagon with stock 8 3/4 - neither fit, not even close, hit the quarter

IMHO an 8” wheel is too narrow for a 295 tire, you’ll have to air them way down for a good contact patch.

Think i'm gonna order this rear setup (the 295's) this week.. anyone have a better deal than Summit? BTW.. will summint mount/balance if you buy rim/tire combo? With the rear axle moved back 1.75 in my '62 it should fit. With my 4.57 gears the 30" should help a bit although i will need to change gears eventually

Funny thing is, i rebuilt my rear wheel lips without thinking bout tires, they came out good but will end up prolly cutting them back some :)
