383 stroker vs 440 stock rebuild

What engine option would you choose?

I love these threads and always learn something new. So just to make this interesting, I have a bone stock 1967 350HP 440 (915 heads) from an Imperial currently in my '69 Sport Satellite that still runs great. I also have two complete (carb to pan) spare motors for an eventual engine swap if I choose not to someday rebuild the 440. Those are a 1968 290HP 2V 383 (906 heads) from a Monaco and a late (7/16/78 block casting date) 1978 190 HP 2V 400 - unsure of the donor vehicle. So, I can go with any of the three, but I would note that the 383 and 400 have never been apart (by me anyway).

I would either build a stock stroke 383, 400 or 440, or a 383/438, or a 400/451. It will only be a weekend cruiser, so torque will be king. I am leaning towards the 451, but as with many things, plans change constantly.

What I am wondering about though is whether the slightly smaller dimensions of the 383/400 and the incrementally reduced weight (65 lbs) make that much of a difference?

I have always had small block equipped cars before (Ford and Plymouth) and like the added clearance for when it comes to working on the car. Granted, a 383/400 is not as small as a 318, but I think there's an inch or two on each side and top which may make a difference.

As an aside, the photo below shows my homemade dolly (383) and a steel dolly (400) that I purchased several years ago from someone on Ebay. It was designed to fit the B engines and is one of the most useful things I have bought. Wish I could have found another one.

I looked at a '67 Belvedere (GTX clone) in half project with the 511/512 stroked 440 build engine. It dynoed 686 HP. Very simular to my 451. The difference? It's lower compression thus hit that number on pump 93. My 451 is 12.3:1 on E-85.

There truly is no replacement for displacement. Especially in the naturally aspirated world.
Was this a 512 cube 440 Source kit?

Hello All,

I have a 383 that is in need of a rebuild, and I fear that the crankshaft might not be salvageable. This would most likely mean stroker kit. I can do a 438 or 496 with 440source which would cost me $2300 + everything else to rebuild.

OR, I could buy a 440 core for probably $500+ and hopefully do a stock rebuild with the factory crank. I figure the increased displacement would offset the 383 stroker kit. I am assuming this way would be cheaper, but I am not sure. Maybe I could sell the 383 to recuperate some funds this way.

For a person who is looking to gain the most bang for their buck, what would be the best option?

I am looking for good street power and tendencies, nothing crazy.

Thanks

I would find out what I had with the strokers first before spending money on another core. You can buy a crank for the cost of a 440 core that you know nothing about.

I just picked up my 383/496 stroker. 10.1. Hoping for 600hp. 650 torque. Will be on the Dyno by June
