Lind had a powerful voice and a great octive range. I saw her in concert around 77-78 & have all of her albums from the 70's. But looking back, you can see that she was no song writer and most of her hits were cover versions.

I don't like the woman's politics at all, but it is a shame that she's got Parkinson's disease.

I saw that article and it's very sad indeed. And how many musicians have politics that we can agree with anyway?

Yep, sort of like Elvis in regard to more song singing than song writing. Another fact about Linda is she sang back up on several Neil Young songs. She's on the Harvest Moon album and did back up on Heart of Gold along with James Taylor.

You can also hear on back-up vocals on Warren Zevon's "Excitable Boy".

you could add Ella Fitzgerald, Dianna Ross, Gladis Night, Petrula Clark, Mary Wells, Nancy Sinatra, Shania Twain, Faith Hill, Lita Ford, Tammy Wynette, Dolly Pardon or even classic singer Julie Andrews to the list of great woman singers...

Connie Francis one of the best from the 50’s

"were the boys are" was a great classic by her

Goldfinger, great old 007 Bond movie & a great song

Since there have been some music threads lately, let me throw this one out there. The wife and I were watching a top 100 female singers show on some channel a while back. To my utter shock, Karen Carpenter wasn't even in it. I just assumed she would be #1 and kept waiting for her to show up on the list which she never did.

Now don't get me wrong...I was never a big fan of the Carpenters music. A little too wholesome for me. But in my humble opinion no one has EVER come close to matching her pitch perfect voice. EVER. Male singers included...

But how in the f%^k do you have a top 100 female singers list and she doesn't make it?
Jean Shepard, even at her age,she still hits every note spot on

I'm not ashamed to say that long ago, I went to see that awful movie "S.O.B" just to see Julie Andrews whip off her top and show her boobs.

yeah I remember that scene too, nice little rack...LOL... she could really sing too, remember The Sound of Music & Chity Chity Bang Bang

Gotta say I liked Lita Ford! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0oVMTtsWQbs #1. I've always been a metal-head. #2. She was hot. #3. She looked just like the girl I was dating at the time the song came out! Those were some good days. Loved her voice, too bad she never did much else of note, other then the Ozzy "If I close my eyes forever". One woman I am watching now is Lizzy Hale from "Halestorm". She seems to have great range, and sings the metal I like. Here's " I miss the misery". One of their breakout songs. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YpJAmlnBxoA

There was that Lita Ford / Tony Iommi thing...

Jeff Gordon! Wait, she doesn't sing, does she.....

IMO, the female singers of today, have too much warbling in their voices and make Rosanne Barr sound gifted....

I'll agree with that.

Also, I think to determine best voice, it should be heard without studio enhancement.
Who would I pick?
I can't decide but, I don't think anyone mentioned Charlotte Church.
I'm not saying she's the best but, certainly on the amazing list.
Thanks to whoever mentioned Carly Simon. Maybe not the best, but I do enjoy listening to her and I like some of her songs.
Chrissie Hynde, I wonder where she placed in the top 100? I heard her live and her voice sounds nice even away from a studio sound booth.

I agree with too much vibrato.

Usually singers who think they are better than they are have that issue.

(which is usually a bigger problem than their vocal shortcomings)
