Best safe place to stop overnight in carolinas?

My buddy and his wife went snowmobiling in Speculator NY (The Adirondack Mtns) many years back and when he
jumped into bed there were toenail clippings in it. Nasty. They got the heck out of there.

Tired of the lousy chain hotels. Lately I have been using AirBNB whenever I travel. They are usually private residences so your vehicle is safe. Never had a bad experience and prices are usually lower than a Hotel.

Country inn and suites are pretty decent as with the revamped comfort inns. Usually stayed at those two.
