Camshaft selection for Mild 440?

The comp cam ran out of steam fairly early. I think the short intake duration, 110lsa, and 4 degrees of advance wasn't ideal for my engine. It blew over 190psi, closed the intake valve at 60 degrees ABDC; i think too early. Put it in straight up would help or use in a low compression engine. I was 9.31 compression. Ironically a tappet failed and i needed a cam quick and tried the 272/.455 and it was 3mph faster in the quarter. The Engle/Hughs 2330 ran the best combined with a pocket port; picked up another 3 or 4mph.

Of all the small cams i tried in a near stock engine none really picked up rpm. All improvement was between 2000rpm to 4500rpm. Never found wider lsa to be a killer, in fact the opposite. The 6401 is just an easy step up from stock. The 272/.455 coupled with 1.6 rocker is an over achiever. I think the Engle would have been a little better with a little wider lsa.

I've got a few new shelf cams i'll never get to try. I think i'd like to do something custom for the kind of work we were doing years back.

We here a lot about the mr. 6pak cam and it's an Engle. pretty sure it's very mild with a 114lsa.

Good stuff. Thanks Lew.

yes your right a small cam with a low lift is not going to pick up rpms. he said he wants to go stop light to stop light 4000 rpms and will never see over 4500 rpms. the stock 440 Hp cams were on a 115 LSA never turned on. I guess BIG JOE Joe Sherman two times engine master winner and David Vizard who did 1000's of engine testing over the years must not know what they're talking about when they say a tight LSA makes more power.

if you want high rpms cams over 5500 rpms making power why would anyone mess with a hydraulic cam anyways. Big Joe also said hydraulic cams are for sissies. lol.

I think you'll be happier with the Hughes 216-220 for your usage.
And I'd make sure of the max on the source heads, not "think".
I went ahead and emailed Hughes about this cam to see what they think. :)

Mild is relative
but that said I am running the old MP purple shaft .509/292 on 108 center line
Edelbrock RPM heads, 10.7:1 compression, Thumper billet carb, 3.91 gear, and 3000 stall TQ

I am extremely happy with this combo
its pushing my heavy Charger into the 11's (7.50's 1/8th)
and the car is drive-able although the highway RPM is a bit high
