Very nice pictures 73AbodEE!!! I just went back thru the FABO and FBBO threads on Gassers & Nostalgic racing. It is amazing the amount of pictures that you have unearthed. A lot of the pictures I am posting here came from you on FABO. So wanted to give credit where credit is due. Nice work man!
And to give credit to some other people, a few pictures and words about the ramchager group and long ram motors. The long ram technology was developed in Chrysler in the mid fifties but shelved when the big three offficially stopped supporting drag racing for a number of years. Tom Hoover and his drag racing buddies came to work for Chrysler about that time in the engine engineering deartment. They all drag raced and had just formed the Ramchagers car club outside of work. They had read the test reports on long ram HP increase done years earlier and decided to apply it to a drag car (first picture w/ fenders for 59, 2nd picture w/o fenders for 60 - They were beating GM and Ford quite regularly).
That was the first car that the newly formed Ramchargers club built together (at this time the club had no formal connection to Chrysler - it was private group lead by Tom Hoover). The car was so successful in 59 & 60 that NHRA changed the rules for the next drag season to restrict how high the centerline of the crank could be off the ground (another drag racing innovation that the Ramchagers pioneered - The higher postion of the engine helped transfer weight to the rear of the car for better traction). That killed the future of this car as it was out of specs for 61. Hoover and his gang went to Plymouth Advertising leader inside Chrysler for sponserhip of a car for the 61 race season. He said no but Frank Wiley Advertising leader from Dodge got wind of what was going on and approached the Ramchargers offering to sponser a car for 61. That was a 2 door Dodge Dart Senaca with a 413 and long rams (3rd & 4th pictures below)
They beat Chevy at Indy during the nationals that year. This win is what woke up the CEO of Chrysler. He then approched Tom Hoover to set a formal group inside Chrysler focused on racing. This was called the Ramcharger group who developed the Max Wedges, 2nd gen Hemi, light weight factory cars, the first successful altered wheelbase cars that became the "Funny Car", ect,ect,ect.
The rest was history and the foundation for a lot of the pictures we are posting here.
