How to decode a 727 transmission?

Is there a definitive source out there to help decode a 727 transmission?

Doing research on the forum the "DATE" code just does not make sense to me.

I'm thinking:


Transmission plant XXXX XXXX XXXX

PK 2534 4213 3005

Kokomo Plant ???? April 23 1973 Daily/sequential build date?

Not sure which of the numbers are the date code though.

Missing number? usually the next seven after PK is the part number designating the year,,,those don't match any trans in my book. For example: PK 3515846 xxxx (1970 383 four barrel after 4/27/70)

I was under the impression the last "4" digits were the daily sequential numbers.

Okay, so with using the Chrysler 10,000 Day calendar:

1. Using the "Next to last" 4-digit numbers: 4213 the DATE is: Thursday Feb 8th 1973
2. Using the "Last" 4-digit numbers : 3005 the DATE is: Sunday Oct 19th 1969

seven digits=part number
next four calendar date
next four=sequence number per day

15 total numbers.
example: PK 3401663 2905 6299
plant year/eng 10,000 calendar sequence that day

PK37*2534 4213 3005 would be from Thursday, Feb 8, 1973. 3005th transmission assembled that day.

A 37***** series PN would be more aligned with the 74-75 model years.

Recheck the numbers. There should be a VIN stamped on transmission to help narrow down the application.

Too bad you can't find a 67' Transmission. I recommend a new torque convertor, built by a company that is experienced. The newer Torque convertors/ transmissions have better Internal parts, though.

Yes, this is the 440 that was making a screeching noise on the you tube video that a fellow Forum member posted.
I purchased the car from him.
I believe the 440 is a 73, I'll check today (08 April 2015)
I dropped the 440 off and had the Short block re-built with all new bearings etc.

Cast crank=external balanced torque converter

I'll most likely pick up a 2,000 RPM Stall Hughes or maybe even a cheap Summitt
Engine will be pure torque.

4136 is the build date November 24, 1972 so it's actually a '73 model year. VIN stamped on the bellhousing will tell more.
