Have you ever tried calling a phone number listed for a long-lost friend that is listed in an internet directory? Always disconnected or just plain wrong number. Please excuse me for pining for the "good old days".

I actually found a old friend that way
even the address, his wife's & his new job location
I was shocked he still lives in Concord, Ca.
my birthplace/ol' home town/old stomping grounds till 1997
he & his wife live in his parent's old house now,
small world sometimes
he's still in the car buss., just in a different town/city,
now the general manager of a BMW dealership, across the bay
instead of a parts dept. & service manager
the phone # was good too

Right after that, I tried it for another ol' buddy
not the same results, it's like he dropped off the face of the earth
I did find his brother thou & got the info I needed
so it wasn't a complete waste

didn't cost me a dime either

can't remember the site name
IIRC, I used DuckDuck.com as the search engine org.
just typed in names

I don't & won't use anything affiliated with Google (except this site)

That sounds familiar - I was searching for steering box images on google yesterday...and when I found one I liked the look of...I clicked on the link which took me to eBay. It was already SOLD and no more available. I did that 5 times before realising it was just a marketing rouse.
Internet advertising is starting to be fake now....or maybe I just noticed that.

I always check the obituaries first.

There's a friend I have looked for with no luck.
Of course, he was born in a Hippie Commune in upstate New York and avoided a SS number until he was in his twenties. that makes it tough enough, but he had at least two names. I don't think his folks were married, never asked. One of his names is a big time lawyer, so any searches for that name are nothing but the lawyer.
It used to be that one could put a search in parenthesis and that would exclude most results, but that doesn't work anymore. He was a good man and I wonder how life went for him.
I've thought of using one of those people finder services that charges money.
