Just a Thought EV

I basically hang out on this and a Maverick forum. On the other forum towing comes up quite a bit and while they aren't heavy load towers everyone seems to be happy towing with that platform, both in Turbo 4 and Hybrid configuration. But boy am I tired of towing threads! :D
I did get mine with the towing package, not because I have any intentions to tow, but because it comes with deeper gears, yes I'm the weirdo that gets an economy vehicle and sees a way to get deeper gears to ruin the economy, just so I can have a little more acceleration.

Used to have a 67 Dart with a /6 and 3 on the tree. Also used to part cars and got ahold of a 70 340 Duster minus the engine and trans. The car was a repo and was a mess but the interior was good and it also had 3.91 gears in the 8 3/4....which all of that went into the Dart. With some tuning, straight pipe, flex fan, open element air cleaner and so on, the Dart really woke up. One cool thing that happened that I didn't expect was the mpg went up to 25 in town!!!

I like gears too and ordered a new 2000 Durago with 3.90 gears and a 92 V8 Dakota was done that way too. In normal driving the 92 got the same mpg as either of my V6 Dakotas I have now and was MUCH more fun! I tried one tank in the 92 with hard driving and it got 12 while I don't have to drive the V6's all that hard to get 12! Made a mistake selling the 92....

When I tow, it's for more than 100 miles, so an EV is a stupid choice. It doesn't even enter into consideration. The new ramcharger truck with on board charging could work, but not sure if that is still on the radar. You guys will know before I find out. EV for a local commute makes sense. It is NOT cheaper and it is NOT green at all, nada. Charging one is like having a commercial ac unit running the entire time it is plugged in. So not cheap, the way electric rates have been climbing, it'll cost more per mile than gas here soon.

I wanted to have one modern car in the fleet that I can use as an appliance and not think about it if I go out of town. I also always wanted to play with the AWD turbo cars when they came out in the 90s but I was poor, so this fills both spots. But since I want the appliance aspect the only mod has been a tune and a sub woofer. I'm aware of the Ford reliability concerns, so just wish me luck!

We sit on one of the Largest deposits of Fossil fuels,, in the World, so lack of fuel in the future is a moot point. It's pretty clear EV's are just another way to Dumb down the users, as you just plug it in til it dies, and plug it in again, until the plugs ins don't work, or the vehicle fails. We'll stay with the gas guzzlers, as there is usually something you can try, to get them running. I have to add, my newest ride is my '05 Cummins, and I really have No intention of replacing that, at 89K miles. Still looking for a nice Southern/Western Jeep XJ that should be my last driver also...

I think the dumbing down is across the board for all platforms tho. Most non car people I know gas and repeat until its time to get a new car. They do not try anything on their own to make it run if it doesn't. We just aren't reg civilians in that sense.

Those look nice, Guy at work has a Tremor version. Pretty much the only Ford I'd be interested to purchase.

They're in Canada as well. Calgary got its first Volterra in July 2024, while Vancouver had its first electric fire truck in 2023, but was a different brand (Rosenbauer).
Don't forget Edmonton ordered 60 EV buses at a price of about $1 million each; 3 years in and more than half the fleet is out of service. Simply put, range, load and cold weather all negatively impact EV battery performance; add 2 or heaven forbid all 3 and it's a recipe for disaster and a lot of "I told you so's". And none of that even includes the safety hazard of these batteries being punctured or overcharged and the major fire risk.

  • Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe said the push toward gas-powered engines is "very bad for the US auto industry."
  • "It blows my mind this is happening," Scaringe said on the "InsideEVs" podcast. "But nonetheless, it is."
  • The CEO said the "reprioritization of capital" would thin the competition in EVs and offer an opportunity for Rivian and Tesla.

What an idiot. People didn't want them 125 years ago and the majority of people today don't want them now. Hey RJ, EVs survived the first 50 years of the auto industry. Maybe your **** will survive the next 50. Be happy with what you can get for those pieces of excrement.

He’s completely out of touch. Where is the charging stations? There’s 1 place in Bartlesville 40k people probably many more. Even if there were charging stations, US grid (generation and distribution) could not handle charging 25% of number vehicles on the road. Didn’t Rivian get some kind of government bail out? We are not even close to being ready to start converting from ice to ev.

Nor will we ever be. There is no point to it. Limited range coupled with battery life makes it a pretty stupid decision. Compare it to every time you fill up your car with fuel, one cylinder loses 10% efficiency, until it's gone, and then the next cylinder starts losing. Kind of a loose comparison, but all the cells lose lifespan and power potential every charge cycle. The batteries may last for 10 years, but by then your range is cut in half or more. Time will tell.

Yes they have gotten a recent infusion of tax payer money... again

Add to this the Environmental concern of WHAT to Do with the dead batteries, and WHO will be responsible for there disposal ? Just like the Windmills, and Solar Panels, it's all great when it works, but there's No Recycling the Whole Toxic Disaster...

They have been trying to build a small Tesla charging station of 4-6 units in a corner of our Cracker Barrel restaurant. It seems like they have been working on it for 7 or 8 months and is not very far along. The Tesla stations have been sitting on the site in boxes for 4-5 months. Other than needing a good sized transformer I don’t see the complication. I’ve seen a good sized Exxon station/convenience store go up in the same period and it’s about ready to open. Not sure of my point - just doesn’t seem to quite be a ready for prime time industry.

That part just sounds like a business opportunity and I'm sure some are springing up already, but I won't bet my life on it. I seem to remember reading that some solar generator stations were starting to use old EV car batteries, because while they were degraded for car use they were still useful.
So there is the potential positive there, but then you get a negative like the fire which was sorta of local to me earlier this year. Some place called the Vistra Energy lithium-ion battery storage facility in Moss Landing, I only know the area because there is a junkyard nearby that I used to visit all the time.
