Some has a different perspective.....
I have a 1970 Camaro I'd like to drop that 440 into Welcome. I see you're 18 and that's quite an accomplishment for your age. Welcome to the hobby!
While I do applaud the work and innovation I would never do something like that especially with all of the mopar engine options that are available whether it would be a magnum engine, new gen hemi, etc. In a street rod, maybe but in a muscle car definitely not, but each to his own. Its your car so only you need to be happy with it and in the grander scheme you can always change it out at some point if you so decide.
Was this a real R/T to begin with? Also please explain how it "improved" driveability and reliability? I got the exact same car as you, but with its stock 440 and i think it is very drivable and reliable. No need to swap anything for these reasons. I'm reading this argument of more reliability and driveability over and over again, but i really dont know why those modern engines should be better in this regard? I can drive my stock 440 charger anywhere and its not hard, difficult or unreliable in any way actually. That said i dont have a problem putting in a chevy engine in a chrysler car. But i would have gone ZZ572 if i did. How did you mated the LS engine to the mopar transmission?
What's the weight difference between all the Mopar engine options and the LS he picked? Driveability for road racing is the stated goal. Some of you old farts need to read all the way down to the latest post before sharing your opinions. Personally, I applaud you for choosing one of the most iconic bodies ever made to start your road race project and for saving another Mopar from the unfinished projects of history.
What would be cool, and what would really piss off the fender tag douchebags would be to make a fender tag with the LS engine entered onto it. Apparently it’s OK to stuff another 572 Hemi (yawn) into a car, but not anything else. Chrysler made exactly as many street 572 Hemi cars as they did LS powered cars.
Put a friggen V10 in there!
You'd get a better reception if you had identified yourself as Hitler rather than starting off with an LS swap in a Charger. Nevertheless, I'm hoping to get back to ORR Sept 2021 and will love to see another classic Mopar out there.
Thank you! No it was originally a 383 car that someone had put a 440 into. As for the reliability, a nice rebuilt 440 would be great, but this one needed a lot of work. It was constantly having problems and leaving me stranded on the side of the road and it had a massive cam with a stock convertor so it sucked on low end torque and overall drivability. Instead of spending the money to make it reliable I figured I would do something better suited towards my end goal of making a road race car. The car weighed 3700 lbs before the swap, and it now weighs just over 3300 lbs without doing any other weight reduction. Taking that weight off the nose DRASTICALLY improved handling. The transmission is a GM 4l60e but I have a T56 to drop in it in the future
For everyone concerned, the engine bay WILL be painted body color in the future. The whole swap was very rushed as I was moving states shortly after I started, the black spray paint is just temporary lol
It's your car, your toy, your hobby, but the guys here are hard core mopar, I think is cool since most of the cars portrait in the site are merely toys, but if I own a 68-70 charger i would prefer a new hemi swap, since now are available at any junk yard, but that's just my opinion, do as you want, is interesting though because almost nobody here does an ls swap, in 2nd gen charger and I mean FBBO.
I always thought you were18 too... Or is it 81?
I'm about to do the same thing to a 70 duster, 5.3 are easy to come by and CHEAP. Had a pipe dream of a cummins but too big, too much $$$, but would be way cool. and welcome by the way looking forward to seeing your progress.
Hi Pritchert403, looks like you've been busy. Now you already knew before you posted that you'd get flamed for that swap, so here's your FBBO gift. Oh, for those not into Charger swaps and haven't seen this, perhaps you should make a post in the Welcome section too.
I have the heart of an 18 yr old but sometimes I feel like 81 Here's your dancing bananas!
sounds like a 4bt would be perfect, and awesome...
that would give it the room but how much torque can you pull out of those,i was looking for stupid rast to justify the work.
What ever trips your trigger , Hell we stuck a 440 and 727 in a 52 GMC COE
was trying to do a trade on one in missouri for that duster just recently but didn't pan out so i got a a body for now to play with
Uncle Tony did a video on issues with the Gen3 hemis.
