Back when, they made the stars all gussied up in period movies and TV shows. Fancy customs fitting nicely, perfectly done hair, clean clothes, fingernails, clean shaven, white teeth, etc. Like the OP’s posted photo.

Aha, yeah on the frontier, no showers, laundromats, toothpaste, deodorant, etc. Viewing actual old photos, people didn’t…look like that. Today I see they do more to make it more realistic. Still, when I see some rather intense love scenes, like in the Outlander series, lol, must be TRUE love getting down with someone who hasn’t had a bath in weeks.
