I'm aware of that tool, but I (like a lot of folks, I'd imagine) have a garage full of "one time" tools I never use again. Didn't want to add to that collection.There's a tool for that, maybe the hammering is damaging the locking tabs?

Besides, by using the brass drift and tapping rather than hammering (see my tiny little brass hammer in previous pics?), it was taking the abuse, being the softer of the two metals - so much so that I'm going to have to put a fresh end on the drift by use of my grinding wheel before its' next use.
The factory locking ring is a hardy unit. I'm not worried about it in the least.
