I helped my dad today prime his 440 (stroked to 505) and the passenger side rockers got oil rather quickly, but the drivers side took forever and I was turning the engine over by hand. I had cut an old valve cover so we could see the rockers and that side got oil very easily. We removed the 2 oiling bolts to see if the oil was coming out the drivers side shaft and we were getting damn little. So we waited about 20 minutes, let the drill cool and for the oil to drain back into the pan, then blew some air down those holes for a (gee, maybe this might do something), then retorqued the rocker bolts. We had to let the drill cool down a few times but then finally we got oil, and it was a weight off his shoulders. We got 75ish lbs spinning the pump and me hand cranking the engine, so can anyone shed some light as to was was happening?? Thanks fellas!!

Hot damn, my buddy called and told me what happened. The no.4 cam journal has 3 holes and they need to match up for both banks to get oil at the same time. So finally after hand cranking the engine, the holes lined up and we get oil to both sides. He said this happens only once per revolution, so thats why one side got oil from the get go and none on the other side. Now my dad can relax and stop thinking about tearing down the engine and looking for a restriction.

That's exactly it. You just have to find the spot where everything lines up.

Mine did that except on the passanger side on the poly. When we took the oiling bolt out the oil started flowing put it back in and worked fine so I'm guessing it was pluged. I was really starting to get bummed when it was not coming out.

I just went through this issue as well. I have a re-built 383 and when trying to prime,I couldn't get oil to come up, nobody told me I had to turn the engine while doing this! I finally figured it out, ever try to turn the engine over with one hand and use a drill to turn the oil pump with the other?

Yea had the same thing on my 451. At TDC #1 firing, the passenger side rocker shaft gets oil. Then not sure when the other side gets oil, but at a certain cam position it does. So each side gets a shot of oil for every 2 crankshaft revolutions.
