Within the next year or so I'd like to travel a portion of Route 66.

If I picked up the route somewhere at mid point what would be the best direction to travel. East to Chicago or west to California. Looking for what "once was" experiences.

I did a portion from Oklahoma City to Amarillo.

Very cool.

Glad I did it.

i've been planning the same thing for a while now. From my research, I suggest picking it up in St Louis and heading west. There's WAY more to see as you enter the western portions of Route 66. St Louis to Chicago doesnt have as much with the exception of the Pontiac Route 66 museum in Pontiac, Illinois. If you pick it up in St Louis, you can walk the Chain of Rocks historic bridge that goes over the Mississippi just north of St Louis.

below is the website I've used to plan my route 66 trip. Keep in mind, much of route 66 isnt on most maps and atlases so if you buy one, check to see if its on it. And its not on most GPS routes either

Yeah, 66 is on my bucket list also. Unfortunately, things being what they are it's likely I won't get to before I'm gone, so I've spent some time online watching a lot of documentaries and such on it instead.
More power to whoever does get to do it!
I'd eat up a thread on here of pics and log entries along the way *hint hint*. :)

I threw out the idea of a Route 66 cruise, jump in where you want and part when you want. I think it would be a fun week!

I'm planning to take my '73 Charger and drop it off (for her use) at my niece's home in Virginia (I have no room to keep both it and my wife), and will take the entire Route 66 from California to Chicago this spring. My niece's husband will fly out and accompany me on this journey. Should be an adventure. Maybe a dash cam would be in order.

Driven it quite a few times myself. As Horace Greely once said..."Go West Young Man, Go West". As the scenery changes in that direction, the full majesty of it all is jus awesome...cr8crshr/Tuck:thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup::usflag::usflag::usflag:

Most of the remains of 66 that I was on were actually I-40 IIRC.

Still beautiful and still passed many iconic Rt 66 scenes.

Yep, Stood on the corner of Winslow Arizona (rt 66) and waited for the girl in the flat bed Ford.Got bored and went to get something to eat....I'm sure I missed her.
Lots of cool little towns out west.Seligman, Peach Springs, I.E. Radiator Springs in the movie Cars. Kingman, Oatman all in Arizona rt 66. Take your time and enjoy !

I took my son on it back in 05 west from near the chain of rocks bridge. I hope to do it again in the future he was only 5 when we did it the 1st time. Lots to see and dont forget your spray can to paint your name at Cadillac ranch. Another good stop was the restaurant for a steak in Texas. We did not try the 72 ounce steak.
The petrified forest and indian dwellings were also alot of fun for us and dont forget the Grand Canyon. Just alot to see and take in.

Go west young man.................

Westward definitely! Course if you 'really' want to do it; it has to be with windows down and no a/c in August like I did in 1970,lol. WITH the vent knobs pulled out for max airflow. The overnite stops were definitely the best(honeymoon cruise to new duty station!)

I've been from Gallup, New Mexico West to the Coast. If you go through Gallup, stay at the
El Rancho on 66. It's where the actors stayed filming Westerns back in the day. Cool place. Nice Lobby and Bar. Stayed 2 nights there when snowed in in November 1990's. Subsequent trips were all taken with the 69.

My brother in law just opened a new restaurant if your east on 66
Kelly's on 66
905 W Main Street, Lexington, IL 61753
If Kelly is there ask him about his dad racing Superbirds and Chargers back in the 70's.
This is great info. I will print and put on file.

What I found interesting to do was count the vintage trucks (not cars, because there weren't hardly any) sitting beside buildings neglected or abandoned, with a coating of light surface rust, but no structural or body panel issues.

Ripe for the picking.

I did see several signs either historical makers, or simply still there for 66.
