Pulled differential again photos of gear tooth pattern so far

Only about 15 miles on this so nobody may be able to tell much.

Kicking myself for not picking up some yellow gear paste. I had some heavy transmission assembly grease so tried applying it on a couple of teeth and wheeling it through the pinion with pressure on the ring gear. It didn’t work too well. I will check with Napa and O’Reily to see if they have any in stock.

I don’t see anything that leaps right out at me - unless I’m confusing the factory lapping for tooth pattern it looks like a nice large contact pattern, maybe a little low towards the toe on the drive side but I’m no expert. It’s making noise at steady throttle/steady speed/40-50 mph, and a little bit on coast down (but not bad). Backlash still feels good so I didn’t bother to check.

I‘ll take it over to them tomorrow or Monday to let them take another look. If any one can make any experienced observances on the photos feel free to comment.
 
No yellow pattern grease locally but I read white lithium grease in a tub works so I’ll check that out.
 
Check the B/L on 8-10 locations and see if its change, that was how I found my problem. Go on and check your carrier for runout if you have big variation on B/L.
 
Well, the white lithium grease was a bust. I’ll post a couple pictures but I can’t tell anything from them. If anything the contact seems to be a little low toward# the toe but its not really clear enough to be certain.

Mala - I checked the carrier with a dial indicator back when the suregrip was put in and got excellent readings. They checked the backlash at 90 degrees and I checked it myself at 3 random spots - all .007” BL.

I dug into my old thread back in 2016 with my first set of gears and hound that reading the backside of the ring gear with a dial indicator, I gut a max runout of .001”. At the time everyone said that was good.

Pattern looks good- from what we can see.. but the gear compound will seal the deal.
 
Gert some real marking compound. It's tough to see with the grease. But if what I see is what I think the pinion looks shallow.

Pictures with yellow paste. The owners believe it looks good. Although the drive side seems a little low the pattern looks good to me (oblong oval) and they point out the light wear on the teeth shows it rises under load. The coast side is what I don’t understand very well - it’s kind of a triangle shape which they describe as a typical swiping pattern - swipe on, swipe off. I think they said they had a 30 thousand shim under the pinion and .007 backlash ( which I confirmed). The light wear pattern on the teeth looks better to me than the paste pattern - I just wasn’t sure if I was looking at factory lapping or actual pattern marking.

Damn aftermarket gears crap.
 
You need to run the pattern with the paste longer. Use a drill motor (not impct gun) on the pinion nut while holding a rag or piece of hardwood on the edge (smooth portion) of the ring gear.

Nothing I see is a problem, and by taking it apart and checking it after "break-in"
you have proven by the pattern and the backlash that everything is funcioning
correctly.

I took a drill and socket over and spun it while the mechanic put drag on it with a rag. Not much different. Pictures aren’t the best now that I open them up.

I’m picking out sound insulation to put under my package tray, behind the seat back and on the floor pan under the rear seat for my fall back plan. Maybe go to Magnaflow. :rolleyes:
 
It looks like pinion is little to close, maybe take out 3 thou. Or increase B/L.... But I have limited experience here so we have to se what other say. :)
 
Take a better picture of the drive side, its hard to see now.
 
Yeah, it’s over in the driveline shop - no more pictures for now. I didn’t realize how dark the pictures were.

The more they look at it the more satisfied they are with the pattern. They might agree to make a change but since they are my gears, theres probably a limit to how far they would go on their nickel.

If it really needs a change I may be back to getting a shim kit and some pattern paint and tackling it myself. It has a crush shim elimination kit in it and for better or worse the pinion depth has been established for a starting point.
 
Drive side looks a tad shallow to me. The pattern is very close if not falling off the face (top) of the tooth. The coast pattern is goofy. I still think it needs more pinion shim.

What about the bare pattern on the teeth Doug? It doesn’t seem to match the pattern I see with the gear paste. Is that the factory lapping pattern I’m looking at?

I went back and looked at pictures of the Richmond gears another shop installed back in 2016. They seem to show the same goofy coast side pattern.

Take a few thou out of the pinion depth . Looks a bit deep to me. Is a good bit of work thou and need new large pinion bearing , probly why heasatant to do it.
