I see the Canadian flag in there too...
Many of you may be familiar with the old “reality” show Ice Pilots NWT, about our local airline, Buffalo. They run a huge fleet of planes, among which are a few DC3’s. One of them is an actual plane that flew D day in the invasion. It’s just a random plane in the fleet, still earning its keep every day. An amazing piece of history.
Now they just fly freight but up to just a few years ago they offered daily passenger service throughout the north on these planes. Riding in a DC3 was a normal every day part of our existence, and it was pretty freaking cool. Definitely NOT like riding on a modern passenger plane.
They still use the DC3’s, DC4’s, C47 Dakotas, and less frequently now the Canso/Catalina amphibians. My house is right on the glide path to the airport, about a half mile away. In the summer especially those planes thunder over the house so close that you can see the rivets on the body panels. A truly amazing sound. One of the town beaches is at the other end of the runway and one time four Catalinas took off and passed right overhead. The sound was thunderous and amazing, and gave a small taste of what it must have sounded like in Europe so many years ago.
