I’m going to attempt to wrap this thread up, good news is I think it’s resolved. Bad news, I don’t know why.
I left off last with the fuel system. Carb went back together and everything inside was in good shape, floats were dead on. All stock jets and rods. Put the carb on and checked pressure and no change. Pressure was fine. I was always on a banzai run every time, this time it took it up to 4K with 1/3 throttle and I was breaking up bad. Nailed it and it didn’t improve so I clicked it into 2nd and it corrected itself and ran up to 5500 without issue. That was a first. Testing was done at that point.
This weekend I ran the valves back to 1/4 turn lash and set the timing. It was close, 35 total now. I was closer to 37 total before. This was the first time I timed it total, vs base. Thing sounds like a diesel.
Ran it this afternoon and it runs to 6k now. Has a weird spot around 5400 where it feels like it ready to ‘float’ again but it pulls through. It also did something strange while cruising where it was breaking up at like 2800-3k rpm, gave it some gas and it cleared up. At some point I’m going to put a good set of wires on it too. Noticed today my ballast resistor isn’t working. 13VDC on one side and nearly 12VDC at the coil.
I’m going to call it good at this point but no smoking gun or ah-ha moment. Valve adjustment and timing should not have done it. I had this at 1/4 turn when I first put it together and it did pull past the bad spot with 1 turn.
