Up until the early 80's where I grew up, the city street lights were mercury vapor lights, and I actually liked the bluish color of the street lights., even thought they were dim compared to todays lighting. Then in 1976 or 1977 while traveling through Meridian Mississippi on one of many Griswald type family vacations we were overwhelmed as we came in to town by the orange sodium lights, and remembering how terrible we thought it was. Well it was only a few years later that my home town converted to sodium lights, and around there and where I am now that is how is has been for over 30 years, well, up until about 9 months ago. It would seem another transformation is underway as streetlights burn out around town they are being replaced by directional high intensity LED lighting. Its interesting that these new light panels are able to direct the light downward and there isn't much that is directed outward, so it would seem there is less wasted light. It will be interesting to see how long it takes to convert the entire town and how much it will reduce light pollution. I think its a nice change. In some of the areas that have several blocks that are all LED its much easier to see things now, and there isn't much glare either. So, is anyone else starting to see this change and what color are your city street lights?

San Jose had yellow lights for years. Reason to lower lighting to allow the Lick Observatory on Mount Hamilton have a better view of the stars. Actually seemed confusing in traffic as a stale yellow traffic light could be mistaken for a streetlight. Being replaced as time goes on with "normal white (safer) lighting as time goes on.

The electric company switched us all to Led, with no input from its customers. The class F light they give us, filled my front yard in light, to where I could of mowed my yard in the middle of the night. The class C that is up now, is brighter, but shines down more, and I think the difference is the lens that they put on it. My yard is still a little bright. Might ask again for a shield to be put on it.

I bought and mounted this mercury vapor light on a tree just outside my back door in 1985. It cost me $19.95 for the whole fixture and it comes on at twilight every night since. (the original bulb still works).
One can see how my mounting method (cables around the tree) has worked out over the years.
The light may not be as bright as it once was but it is still plenty for the task.
